Hi there,

hoping you can help - I've had a search through the forum but can't seem to see a query matching mine (apologies however if I've missed it and this has already been answered)

I've installed the demo version (1.2) of Jamstix which I'm using with Cubasis VST 4.0

It plays the internal samples and follows host tempo fine - the irregularity seems to be in the free jam along to audio - I can get the "incoming" red light but only when the host ISN'T playing (regardless of monitoring/armed settings for the track)

Cubasis's input meters are tracking the audio just fine, and I'm getting normal audio monitoring.

Things I've checked:

M8 selected as insert effect in the audio channel (which I have set to stereo) - CHECK. When I brought up the little window with the VU needle it followed the audio input except when the host was playing.

Jamstix selected in the vst panel - CHECK. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I select it as one of the midi tracks, or indeed if monitoring is enabled. If jamstix is playing and the host is playing I get drums but no red light. If the host isn't playing I get the red light but no drums.

I have a nasty sneaky feeling that somehow Cubasis won't let me use insert effects in a way that's compatible with the M8 plugin for free jamming with audio.

I have no compunction about switching over to a host that does, however! If indeed it's a cubasis-related issue then I'd be grateful for recommendations for a fairly humble sequencer that's downloadable and known to work fine with jamstix! (I believe tracktion is meant to be quite good, for instance?)

Any advice/solutions/sequencer recommendations most gratefully received! Apologies if I've posted on an already well-covered topic.

Hi NP and welcome to the board!

Cubase VST 4.0 is an older host, I'm not even sure what VST version it supports. Hopefully someone else here on the board has some ideas or experienced something similar?

Thanks Ray - and thanks for the prompt reply!

Not only is it an old host, it's actually a cut down version of an old host!

I just fired up a demo of the new tracktion 2.0 and JS worked right from the get-go. It was fantastic. I'm a bit miffed that tracktion 1.0 isn't even available at all anymore - they pulled the free download at the end of '04.

I've got all manner of ideas for things I want to try buzzing round my brain now. 30 minute dub/reggae bass odyssey here I come!

My remaining question (yes, there's always one isn't there) is how I would go about turning the result of an audio-input jam into actual recorded audio in the sequencer, exactly as I heard it through JS? Presumably the sequencer just records the instrument audio, and I read on another post that if I feed the recorded audio back into the JS VST on playback it'll do the same thing again.

I still don't quite get how to turn it into down-on-disk actual audio though. Is there also a way of doing it on-the-fly, for instance turning the whole thing into a stereo track on the first pass? (Essentially turning the computer into a glorified tape recorder - you can tell I'm a guitarist, can't you!)

Again, apologies if this is a sequencer-specific question. Thanks again for your help.

I believe there are tools out there to record a VSTi audio output to a WAVE file. Other than that, turning VSTi audio data into host audio data depends on the host. These functions are usually called 'bounce' or 'freeze'.
