Ralph,

I was working on a track in REAPER. My CPU usage went though the roof (I don't know which plugins - actually I suspect the SSL Duende Native plugins that I'm beta testing right now - I don't think it was Jamstix). Anyway, I saved the project, quit and restarted and now my song I had been working on is gone.

Is there somewhere that data is saved where I can retrieve/restore my song? Where is song data kept?

I don't have autosave turned on.

Thanks.

Got my drums back!

I use REAPER's persistent history feature and a few edits back had my full Jamstix song!

Phew, I felt nauseous there for a while!

I'm not sure what happened, but I obviously saved in a very bad state.

I suppose I should use the autobackup feature just in case, eh?

Reaper also keeps a .bak file in the project folder. If you open the folder in Reaper and choose to view all file types you'll see it.It makes a copy of of the project just before the last time you saved it.

Also back up your projects on a regular basis and save often,

See this thread,

I save my Songs in JS and Reaper just in case of problems so I also have a back up of the drum track.

Thanks for the tip Shep.

The worst that would have happened to me would have been losing the day's work because I do have a backup script that runs nightly to copy my project to another disk.

I save often. Probably too often. I'm chronic about it. This may have meant that my .bak file was two saves too late to recover the drums.

I used to use the REAPER auto backup feature, but it was saving while I was recording and messing up my sessions, so I stopped using it. I need to get into the habit of turning it on while I'm mixing and leaving it off while I'm recording.

Like everything else in REAPER, there's many ways to skin the cat.

REAPER + Jamstix pretty much changed my musical life.

Going to be turning the autosave feature on in Jamstix too now. Can't be too cautious when it comes to your babies, eh?

I don't like auto-save.I never use it.I just use keyboard shortcuts to save when happy.Auto-save can save things I don't want.

Using Karen's Replicator makes updated backups fast and easy.I know Later O/S than XP have their own file back up systems.

Also I keep consolidated .ogg format back ups of my projects.I can easily keep my present 97 projects on an 8 gig USB flash stick and they are decent quality even in that format.

What a lot of people don't know is that one of my most played tracks,"Portuguese Sun" was originally recorded @ 16 bit 44.1k and the finished rendered file was from an .ogg consolidated project. Thus proving to me that the,"AudioPhiles" can argue as much as they like about 48/96k/196k rates,it's all in the tracking, mixing and mastering AFAIC,at least for ,"Home Recording".

OT, I know, but why not use FLAC or APE? Compressed, lossless and can store almost any format used in Reaper (or maybe all, I've never worked with anything denser than 96k audio).

Because they don't compress as small as .ogg Smile

Also I'm quite happy with 24 bit 44.1k.It's very easy for people to use higher formats thinking they are improving their sound but actually miss the point. If one does not get the basics right no amount of increased rates will help it.
I discipline myself to try and get good mixes and sounds at 24 bit 44.1k and render to 128k ABR.If I can get a good sound at this I know I've plenty of room to improve it later.

I don't mind spending more space for my stuff, but I see your point. Smile
