Hi all, I just joined. I'm a Reaper user and recently purchased EZDrummer. One thing about EZD is that I find it takes quite a bit of drag-and-drop to create a song from scratch. Someone over at Reaper recommended that I look into Jamstix as it has a function that easily creates song structures such as intro/verse/verse/chorus/bridge/verse or whatever I wanted.

Will the demo version allow me to try this feature? I'm hoping Jamstix works well with EZDrummer and Reaper.

thanks!

Yes, you can try the song builder in the demo. You can also use EZDrummer grooves as building blocks in Jamstix and load EZDrummer into Jamstix for sound generation.

Let me know if you need any help.

Thanks Ralph, I've been looking at other posts here trying to answer some of my other questions. Guess the next step is download Jamstix and give it a try. If all goes well I plan to purchase a copy.

ok I am sorry to be such a noob, but I d/l'ed the demo and installed it, but I cannot see where to run it, I don't see a shortcut or anything to click on to run the demo.

Where can I find it?

The demo is located in the C drive. The data folder is there, some .dll files, a config settings document, the uninstall file, but I can't see how to start the program.

thanks..

Jamstix only runs as a vsti plugin within a host DAW

Edit: If you installed it into your vst plugins folder with all your other plugins reaper should find it on startup, if not you will have to point reaper to where you've installed jamstix.
Then jamstix will be listed along with EZ drummer etc in reaper.

Cheers

You also sometimes have to use the clear Cache and rescan in Reaper's Options/Preferences/.once you have added the path to where you have put the Jamstix Folder with the Jamstix3.dll in it unless as above you place the Jamstix3.dll in your Reaper Plug-ins folder and rescan.

Also the song creator may make a two bar silence so you can just delete that otherwise you might think JS is not working Smile

ok I got it loaded and Reaper shows it along with Toontrack (EZ Drummer) as a VSTi. I have Jamstix demo open and so far so good. But now, when I select a song and hit play, nada. However, when I run my cursor over the bar editor on the lower right I can hear all of the drum sounds just fine.

I've watched the quickstart tutorial and I can't figure this one out.. what am I missing?

thanks...

Jamstix plays in sync with the host ( reaper ) its bpm and start position etc is all controlled by reaper.

So if you have loaded a quick start song in jamstix it should load a kit, style and drummer automatically

Now set the bpm you need in reaper and press play in reaper and you should be hearing the drum track play.

Cheers

ok I got it to play, thank you all for your patience. Yes I am completely new to how VST and VSTi works. I've been away from music recording for many years and am just coming back into it, so much of this stuff is all new to me especially the entire concept of virtual instruments. but it's really a journey of discovery for me now.

Will Jamstix default to EZDrummer's sounds or it's own? How do I check what sounds Jamstix is using? Part of my struggle is that I don't know if I'm dealing with the demo's limitations or my own ignorance. Probably a good dose of both. Smile

oh, in the demo when I selected a quickstart song sometimes there is a red X in the composition bar spaces over certain instruments and the instrument does not play on that beat. Again is that a demo limitation?

thanks again..

Yes I saw that video and that's what faked me out originally, I didn't know that I had to have Reaper open and have a track actually playing underneath in order to use the button shown on the video to start and pause Jamstix. hah...

oh I'm panicked all right. This truly is a case of the more I learn the less I know. But I love creating music and I'm so fascinated by what is possible that it's all good fun and such a great feeling when I finally get it all working together.

You must stick with it as there's no other program like JS and once the,"Penny Drops" you'll be flying along.I could not go back to hand midi drum programming, way too slow.

Check out Ben Vesco's tutorial. It's for the older JS2 but lots of still valid info to get going,

http://www.benvesco.com/blog/home-studio/2008/jamstix-2-tutorial-1-your-own-studio-drummer/

His page is a must read anyway if you are just getting,""back in the saddle" and using Recording software,

Well worth a bookmark Smile
