if you got the time, would appreciate inputs.

I haven't been recording much in the last year; mostly because of schedule but that's going to change. Am also going to be getting a laptop for other reasons (that will make it quite capable), but would like to use for recording.

Was using Tracktion 3, but have forgotten most of the tricks and it is definitely orphanware now. Do have Jamstix (plus packs).

Twofold:

Are there any drawbacks to laptop recording? I will have some midi interface issues to work through (no parallel port for MOTU).

Also, since Traction 3 is orphanware and will have to relearn major chunks of it, is there a comparable product that has such an easy to use and capable interface (that works well with Jamstix 3)?

Edited to add: It's going to run 64 bit Windows 7.

Thanks all,

Dave

Be careful with lap tops. There are some apparently that don't play nice with sound recording and also it's usual to have to disable Wi-Fi whilst recording.

As for Recording Software,"Reaper" is cheap and works well with Jamstix,

http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

and has a busy and well -informed and polite forum,

http://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20

Use it's search function for info on laptop problems and recording.

All my stuff on Reverbnation is done with Jamstix and Reaper.See sig.

Hi!

No problem in using a laptop for music production nowadays.

What I want to know is: Did you like Tracktion and its approach to music production? If yes, I would continue using it (why is it orphanware, isnīt it still in production?), if no, what is it that you didnīt like?

People tend to recommend their DAW of choice when askes questions like these anyway... Smile

Do you know of any list or site that might give me a clue on laptops vs recording compatibility?

I looked at Reaper a while back, worth another look.

Great to hear; hopefully this one will do it too.

Orphanware = abandoned by manufacturer. No more future versions or current support beyond existing (2 year old) patches. Can get it for 19.99 at MF.

It has a very intuitive interface. Left to right is inputs, recorded audio or midi graphic depiction, and then plug-ins/outputs. Not banks of sliders. And you can get it up and running pretty quickly.

What it didn't do well is midi recording of plugins such as Jamstix. Had to do some kinda kluge. A bit hazy now, but, IIRC, initially ran Jamstix from beginning to end of song and then drug entire midi song from Jamstix onto Tracktion track. Believe eventually ended up using midi-yoke to loop it back as an input.
