Hi Ralph,

JS rules.

Can I humbly request that you please change the behaviour so that we can use the bar editor while the host is playing?

I know the preview button allows real time changes, but that's not what I'm after. I need to hear the song under the drums while I edit, otherwise the workflow is really broken up.

Please?

Thanks for your consideration.

We are considering that. Currently, AI and manual editing competing under multi-threading conditions (AI-audio thread, USER=editor thread), with both threads under host control, is difficult to manage.

Thanks for even thinking about it. It would be awesome to be able to do this. Even if there was a lag sometimes while you made sure that everything remained in order, it would be great. Typical workflow would be to have the host loop a small section rather than have JS do it. I'd be elated even if I had to wait for the next repetition.

You know what else would be good? I'd like to be able to select a different bar while actively looping the current one, rather than having to unselect the loop icon, select different bar then re-select the loop icon.

Cheers.

Good idea Ed. Your tunes rule BTW...

Ralph, I was thinking about this. What makes this more difficult than pressing the compose button while the host is looping? This is still a user action that changes the note placement while the audio is playing. Isn't it really the same thing as tweaking a dial while the audio is playing?

PS - I'm a programmer, so you can geekspeak if you are inclined to do so.

Thanks man!

Pressing the COMPOSE button (which occurs in the GUI thread) merely marks the bar for re-composition by the audio thread so there are no conflicts. Placing/changing a note in the bar editor directly manipulates data in the GUI thread that is concurrently used by the audio thread. That is where the problems occur. It can be done but requires complex staging of the event manipulation.

Hey Ralph, I was wondering if any of the changes you have made in the last couple years bring us any closer to having this feature.

This is something that I still wish I was able to do every time I fire up Jamstix.

Like the compose button, I think it would be completely reasonable for Jamstix to play the sound on the subsequent loop. So good for workflow (mine anyway).

Thanks!

I've put this on the JS4 list, mate.

Here are some feature requests Razz

- Create .nki files of the various kits for use in Kontakt (or Kontakt Player)

- Replace all circular dials with sliders or replace both with more standardized looking versions of the controls

- Have the numerical value of the dial / slider be displayed while the control is being manipulated

- Separate the AI from the GUI and provide an SDK for it. I'd honestly consider taking up application development again to develop a more streamlined GUI if I could reuse the existing AI. If you would seriously consider this one I would be more than happy to help you design the SDK interfaces. Very Happy

Duly noted. The SDK thing is something we're not ready for anytime soon but has been considered down the road.

I appreciate that. If you didn't design the system from the outset to have a split between the GUI and the underlying AI then this is far from a trivial thing to do.

Really what I'm after is a better interface. For example, I would never do editing in JS. I export MIDI; import into Cubase; and edit there.

This would require that the AI be separate from the "sound module" function currently in JS and is also the reason why I requested that the JS kits be recreated as Kontakt .nki files (and let's also add drum maps while we're at it) since Kontakt player is free. Even though I use the Battery mappings, if there were .nki files I would be more likely to use the JS kits.

Yes, I'm assuming everyone uses Cubase, which I know isn't true. But Kontakt does have RTAS and AU versions, I believe, so users of other DAWs wouldn't be left in the dark.

My suggestion does eliminate the ability to rearrange drumkits in the GUI, but I suspect not too many people do this in any case. Do you have statistics on this?

Ralph!!! It works in 3.5!!! Since you're saying that it will be in JS4, I can only assume that it was not planned that it works, but it does and it is beautiful!

I'll still be in the front of the line for JS4 though Smile.
