Here's a strange issue. I'm using Sonar X1 (but I have noticed the same issue with Sonar 8.5.3 now that X1 is installed). I'm using 3.02 beta 14 but the issue was there in 3.01 as well (I just upgraded to the beta today in hopes that it would resolve the issue). I'm on XP SP3 as well.

I'll change the Player behavior setting to Chorus in the Groove window, I'll also change the final chorus to use open hats instead of ride for instance. When I close the program the settings all revert back to default and ride. Some settings don't revert (Fill focus settings for example) but I can't be sure that there may some others that aren't.

Can anyone else confirm this?

I will try to get home at lunch and get it for you. One thing I didn't try was to create a completely new project and see what happens with that. The projects I'm having this issue with (so far) have been Sonar 8.5.3 upgraded to X1.
