Hello,

I want to use JS3 with SSD mappings, but avoiding subhosting, that is routing JS MIDI output to a Kontakt 4 instance located on another track with REAPER (there are too many issues in general with subhosting imo, REAPER handles wonderfully MIDI routing so that's the way to go for me).

I tried loading an SSD kit with "keys only" set but the kit doesn't seem to load at all, no MIDI output, no kit picture. This even after changing the j2k files to use the right Kontakt dll.

Loading the kit entirely, on the other side, seems to work, but I am looking for confirmation; in short, I want to be sure no dll instance is being loaded automatically when subhosting.

Jamstix3 presents "Load plugin" and "Open plugin interface" menu items by right clicking on plugin name; it seems it does not subhost by default and subhosts only by choosing those menu items. Is it right? If so, I'm all set but if not, what's the correct procedure to use the j2k kits for SSD without actually loading the plugin in JS3?

As a side request, Kontakt 4 player by default has 32 outputs, Jamstix3 only 16 and complains if K4 is loaded for subhosting. Is an increase to 32 outputs in the plan?

Thanks a lot,
Mario

If you use SSD outside of Jamstix, check 'MIDI Out Only' in the JS3 mixer and then load an SSD mapping in JS normally. It will NOT actually load Kontakt with the above setting.

JS allows up to 17 stereo outputs (34 channels), which can be set in the JS3 options.

It seems the default Kontakt 4 (Player) dll offers 32 stereo outputs.
Not a biggie anyway, I think SSD doesn't even use half of them, so Ill just keep the reference to the 16 stereo out dll.

Will try soon the "MIDI output only" option, thanks!

But what if I want to use some sounds from the internal JS kits and some from SSD?

If you download the Addictive drums demo or use your Steven slate to replace it then try this Track template for Reaper

http://www.box.net/shared/21ing89naa

In Reaper make a new project and then Track/Insert track From template and point it to the PowerKit.RTrackTemplate

This is what I came up with,
http://www.box.net/files#/files/0/f/16802905/1/f_560137339

This will give you an idea how I mixed the JS kit with the Addictive Drums kit.Saved as a Track template in Reaper they can be then loaded into any project easily.

There's loads of ways of doing these things and a lot of sounds you can get using processing as well.I sometimes just use a blank project and spend some time just getting a drum sound for no other reason than it may be useful at some other time but not for a specific song as a form of mixing/technical practice Smile

Note: I used the Modern Deathcore Distortion Compressor from this pack,

http://antress.er-webs.com/

be careful as it can crash Reaper from time to time I suspect so save work regularly if it does.

YMMV.

Hi Sheppol_A; I know subhosted sounds can be freely mixed with internal sounds, what I'm after here is having the kit mappings loaded without subhosting the plugin, and Ralph told me how to do it; the flaw in his solution is that JS can no longer play its sounds because everything is routed to MIDI Out .

So, the next step is being able to have some sounds played by JS internal kits and others to plugin MIDI output (in REAPER of course) without having to subhost (or at least without loading in memory) the drum plugin within JS3.

Is your template capable of such a thing?

Thanks a lot,
Mario

I'm not sub-hosting so JS can play what it likes as can the the 2nd drum program/sampler.You decide what gets played by muting sounds and or routing the midi outs of the individual drums so they Don't play so I would say,"Yes" the template can do that but you will have to edit it to suit.Once done save as a track template and you will have whatever set-up whenever you need it.

May take some time to set up but once done and saved then you don't have to do it again Smile

If you need to mix external and internal sounds, it is best to create/use an internal kit with all the sounds you'll need. Don't use 'MIDI Out Only' but use 'Keys Only' to load the SSD key assignments into the internal kit. Now set the kit elements that SSD should play to 'Subhost' (even though none is loaded).
