With the latest build 1.02F Jamstix pretty much works great for me and I can really use it to get some useful drum tracks.
A few things that would make it even easier for me to work with...
1. Cymbal control
In the Rhythm tab you can control on what beats of the bar the kick, snare, hihats and toms are hit but not the cymbals. .
It would be good to have the same control for the cymbals as sometimes you want to do a cymbal hit on a specific beat for an accent.
I realise you don't really have much screen real estate left...
2. It would be good if the sliders on the Jam tab told you at what level they were similar to the way they do on the Rhythm tab.
Sometimes I will make a change, decide I don't like it and want to set it back to what it was and have to just guess at where it approximately was.
Same with the velocity response knob - would be good to get an indication of what level it is at for the same reasons
3. In the arranger tab you can't see the full Rhtyhm name if it is longer than about 10 characters.
This makes it difficult when you have Rock Basic I, Rock Basic II and Rock Basic III all in use at the same time.
Maybe have it so that when you mouse over the name it shows the full name or have it so that you can resize the width of the area that the names are.
Thanks,
Rich |

Make sure to get 1.02G as it fixes MIDI-Out mode issues as well as improving n-Track usage.

Yes, that is one of those things. We could hardly justify the real estate for the tom panel and it's always a battle between complexity and easy of use. But definitely see the point!

I just put in on the list

Another real estate thing of course. We'll do the tooltip solution in one of the next updates _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Cymbal control, like the rest would be a great addition as I total agree that just with slider it's hard to get accents on a beat you want!!

Understood. As a work around for now, you can use MIDI automation on the 'Cymbal Probability' parameter and rip it up to 100% on the beat you need a cymbal on and then drop it right back down. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hey that's a great idea Ralph.
There seems to be so much in the midi automation area that I have not explored yet...
I'll give it a go tonight when I get home.
thanks,
Rich |

It's one my favorite things because it gives you such precise and extensive control. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph,
I've played with "Probability - Cymbals" and "Probability - Cymbals in Powerplay" envelopes and I can see the cymbal sliders moving in sync with the envelope but even with the slider at full the cymbal hit doesn't necessary happen where I want it.
As an example if I want a cymbal hit on the first beat of a particular bar, I tried making the envelope jump up on the beat and also a bit before the beat, but it doesn't necessary put a cymbal hit on or right after the envelope change.
It does put a lot more cymbals in whilst playig with the slider up full but would be good to have the ability to nominate the beat like the other drums...
Maybe I'm not using the envelope properly...
Thanks,
Rich |

I agree, RichLum, this method is just a work-around. We'll have to give you better cymbal control in one of the next updates.
The reason why you may not hear the cymbal everytime could be the limb-priority-control. Can you discern other sounds playing when it is missing the cymbal that would take up both hands of the drummer? (it does override hihat so that one doesn't count) _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I was just doing a search on the cymbal control issue and found this thread.
I haven't tried this yet, but would it also be feasible to export a rhythm as a MIDI file, place the desired cymbals in a MIDI editor or piano roll, and then import that file back into Jamstix as a new rhythm?
A small hassle, but possibly a better workaround for me if it works. |

Yes, you'd export the MIDI, add and remove notes as needed, then switch Jamstix to manual mode, click 'Mute Brain' (X beta needed) and feed Jamstix the MIDI data. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| Thanks Ralph. I just downloaded the latest beta last night -- I just need to look up what the new Mute Brain button does. I'll check the beta thread. |

The Mute Brain button makes sure that Jamstix won't add any improvisational stuff to your manual MIDI feed. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Oh okay -- that sounds very useful. Thanks again!
How the heck do you get so much done when you're always here answering questions so fast? Do you have a clone that does the actual work or something? |
