I've recently purchased jamstix and am very impressed it's a great product.

What i want to achieve here is probably not what Jamstix is designed for but maybe there is a way I'm missing.

There is a drum loop originally from the Brutal Beats Loop CD, it was used by Steve Stevens (Billy Idol guitarist) for a demo of a guitar pickup.

I would like to use this beat as the basis for a song. I've tried recreating it in the part editor but it's an odd timing/swing.

Is there an known technique for getting the beat out of an audio sample? Or a good work flow for copying?

I'm using reaper as a sequencer with Jamstix but also have an old Cubase if it's needed.

Thanks for your help. Very Happy Very Happy

What I do is creating the beat by hand in the bar editor, using the preview mode so it loops. If there is odd timing stuff going on, use the timing knob for events and/or the extended timing options available via right-click in the bar editor (+32nd etc.).

Once the groove is correct, save it and then you can use it via a 'Groove Importer' in any project you want.

There is a thread in the Reaper forum that covers a similar process. The OP spells out how he used Stillwell's Drumtrigger to send midi data to a sampler which replaced the audio with samples. You could probably just record the midi on another track and use it to analyze your loop.

This is probably mentioned in the Reaper thread, but I'd try drastically EQing the original clip to isolate the kick, snare, etc one at a time and then a) triggering off of that or b) rendering it with the EQ and using it as a reference with a beats/bars track grid to draw MIDI by hand.

Then you'd at least have a starting point for copying it into JS for some fun.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I think I'll try a few simple beats before I tackle the real one so I ge the feel of what I'm trying to do.

Let us know how it works out - I'd like to try this, too...
