Hi Rayzoon Community!
I feel like I know a lot of you because I'm read so many bloody posts trying to solve my problem. I'm at the point where I want to reach through the computer and beat the living piss out of Carter, Mark, Charlie and the lot of them.
But I'll back track a little so y'all can understand the genesis of my frustration.
I've bought Jamstix awhile ago, and have used it in ProTools with the VST wrapper. However, I haven't really tapped its brain function much as I was relying in it as drum module for rhythms I had already created.
But I've been trying lately to use Jamstix to it's full potential in creating drum parts. So I get things going in Free Jam and it sounds great. A phat groove going. Well, then I plot out my song, give a verse section a 4 bar pattern, repeat 2, in 8th Rock style and I get NOTHING. No kick, no snare, occasional hihats. I add tom groove, and I get that. I try multiple drummers, no luck. I try changing styles to something funky, still no kick or snare. I try country, nothing. Metal gives me too many kicks. (Doesn't fit the song either.) The only style that gives me reaally anything is Mozambique.
Mind you, this is using the AudioM8 plugin feeding the guitar, bass and lead lines to Jamstix and it is a FULL POWER. Thinking the feed could be the problem I do Jam w/o Input, and CRANK the power. Still no kicks, no snares. I increase their individual power and complexity, no change.
Then I read post and I turn off the "reduction" button. Still no groove.
Then I read the posts about how ProTools can be the problem. So I export the audio of the instruments and then create a session in Reaper. Same thing happens. Sound fukingruven in Free Jam mode, but when I set up the song in Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse2, blah, blah structure, no kick, snare, no groove. And again, I make sure power level is thru the roof, I click off "reduction."
Seriously, if these were real life drummers I would have fired them after 20 minutes!! I mean WTF!, what drummer can't play a simple 8th note kick-snare pattern. I'm a guitarist and I can do that!
So anybody, if you can please tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'd love to know. I'm really at the end of my proverbial rope here. I hate that I'm getting this frustrated by a collection of zeros and ones. And I have both a math and music degree to boot!! And it doesn't need to be Ralph, as you do so much already. I'll email someone the Reaper and Jamstix files if that will help as well.
My deep thanks in advance!!
Musically yours,
Jim |

Very odd situation. It is usually always caused by low power and reduction on but you already covered that base. Can you send me the REAPER file?
In general, please don't let things frustrate you for too long. This forum is a friendly place where I and other users are always glad to help. Do not hesitate to come and ask for help BEFORE it is driving you crazy _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I'm emailing the Reaper file as well as the Jamstix file.
And yes, i should post a lot sooner with my problems. I just thought I'd go thru everyone's posting first to see if my problem had been covered. It was so frustrating seeing people saying, "Oh yeah, things are going great with my music!" while I couldn't get my drummer over the ground.
Ok, emailing the files now. Whatever solution we figure we should post here so all can see. It'll probably show that I was doing something stupidly wrong and I'll be man enough to admit that if that's the case. lol |

I checked your project and the problem is the groove weights. Do you remember messing with them? If you look at the bar editor you can see that you all your weights are 'syncopated'. Therefore, any style that uses groove weights will produce unexpected results as it cannot see any heavy or medium ticks.
You can solve this by using 'Reset To Default' in the song menu->Groove weights. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks for the quick reply, Ralph! Still having issues, though
Ok, reset the song and groove weights. Set the Percussion 1 verse & Chorus to silent because I want to focus on the drum kit. In the resetting I even clear out the parts in the Intro I drew in. (Also, weird thing there in that even though marked silent, the drummers throw in random stuff.) I've set both the verse and chorus drummers to Carter. Both sections styles is 8th Rock. I've disabled the tom groove in the verse, even though I'd like it there in the future.
The problem, well I still get no kick and snare in the verse, but it comes in full swing in the chorus as if Carter is playing a proper 8th note groove. I'm still only getting hi-hat in the verse.
Of, course 8th note rock is not the style I really want for this piece, though after all the frustrations I was having, I figured let me try something really simple.
Again, thank you for the help so far. We've got a groove in the chorus, so that's progress!

Yeah, that last thing you recommended about the complexity and bias of the kick drum got it working fine. I'll have a version of the song up for the message boards sometime over the weekend.
Thanks again!! |
