Thanks Ralph. I was not successful:
- I have BFD loaded as a DXi and could not find a vst dll. Is there a work around?
- JS2 is looking for a BFD Stereo dll when I want BFD All. Is there a BFD all mapping in JS2?
Thanks for the help in advance. |

You need to have the VST DLLs to use them with Jamstix 2:
BFD Stereo.dll
BFD All.dll
etc.
You can make your own BFD All mapping by loading the 'BFD' kit that asks for the stereo DLL and you just cancel the prompt for the DLL. Now go to 'Select DLL' and use 'BFD All.dll'. Load the desired kit in BFD and when all is set as desired, save the whole enchilada to a new JS2 kit. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I'm now to Jamstix 2 so I may just not quite have my head around it quite yet. I love the new interface and the sample sets are extremely good BTW.
I'm looking to try to:
1. Be able to compress/EQ and pan certain kit pieces individually on a Cubase track rather than have them interfacing as stereo pairs ( same basic interface as BFD2 - 16 x mono and 8 x stereo)
2. Mirror the Jamstix kit with kit pieces in BFD so that the different stylists, have access to the percussion instruments (one of the biggest PITA's with using the BFD percussion, IMO) then save this BFD kit as a preset that Jamstix can load as a default and if I want to load up a latin rythym, Jamstix triggers my BFD generated percussion instruments. It looks like this one might actually be possible to do without too much trouble.
Kudos on the V2. This is amazing.

The best way may be this:
- load BFD2 kit into Jamstix 2 via the 'Kit' window and the BFD2 pre-made kit that comes with Jamstix 2.
- open the BFD2 GUI in Jamstix with the 'Edit' button in the kit window
- save the BFD2 kit to a file
- check 'MIDI Out Only' in the Jamstix 2 mixer
- load BFD2 separate from Jamstix 2 into the host
- load the kit file you saved into BFD2
- add a MIDI track to the host with input=Jamstix and output=BFD2
What this does is cause Jamstix 2 to load and use the BFD-specific mappings but not actually load the DLL (caused by the 'MIDI Out Only' setting). This way you have BFD2 separately in the host and can use its outputs as needed but Jamstix is still 'driving' it via the MIDI track.
You can then use percussion sounds in BFD as desired and just have to make sure that the corresponding sound slots in Jamstix 2 use the correct MIDI key. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Great. thanks for the timely and detailed answer. When you look up the definition of midiot in the dictionary, there' s picture of me. I've been playing around with the midi mapping features of BFD2 and it appears you can manually map each piece of kit that is loaded in a slot in BFD2 to whatever corresponding kit piece in Jamstix. It's a bit wierd because every time I map a piece in BFD2, it requires me to go back and remap them all over again, but the situation looks promising as to the possiility of the little dim bulb lighting up in my head up at some point.
Actually, what I'm finding is that the Jamstix kits just seem to work so nicely inthe contest of a mix, that the BFD stuff is a bit like reinventing a bit of a squeaky wheel. If I could just pan and compress/eq each Jamstix kit piece individually in Cubase, I'd probably not waste my time with all the mappings in BFD.
Regards,
DJ |

It is possible to accomplish this without loading the BFD kit into Jamstix and then loading another instance of BFD2.
following the steps that you described, I loaded BFD2 as the sound engine in Jamstix.
I then created a 32 instrument kit in BFD2 and loaded the kit pieces I wanted to various slots.
I right clicked on each kit piece in Jamstix, then opened up the midi mapper in BFD2 and identified the mapping for each kit piece there, then went back to the Jamstix mapping window and set the Jamstiz kit pieces to correspond to the proper note# (s).
I then saved this kit in BFD2, set the Jamstix program to Midi out only and also saved the corresponding configuration in Jamstix as a kit (using the BFD folder for convenience)
I then unloaded Jamstix from the VSTi window, reloaded it, loaded the saved Jamstix BFD configuration that I had created. I did not load the BFD2 .dll.
I opened BFD2 and loaded the kit preset that I had mapped to the Jamstix
kit pieces.
I then created a midi track and set this Jamstix project to be the midi input and the corresponding BFD kit to be the midi output.
Worked perfectly and saved a bit of memory since the BFD kit pieces were not loaded into memory in both Jamstix and the 2nd instance of BFD.
This doth Rhaque!!!

I'm trying to get Jamstix 2.5.2 and BFD to play nice in Sonar 8.3.1 but I'm having a hard time.
First, quick question: Why must there be an audio track with its input from Jamstix to get this to work? I worked so hard to build a BFD kit using the above method, with each piece having its own track in Sonar, and then it took forever to figure out why Jamstix did nothing. Not until I just tried inserting an audio track with its input from Jamstix did anything happen. Nothing is actually using the track so it's not making sense.
Second, my main problem is ever few bars the timing is catching. I've tried this in one of my song files that already has a midi track (originally from Jamstix before I started messing with BFD). The existing midi track plays back fine. But, once I get Jamstix to start playing BFD, the timing gets off.
So I decided to start from scratch in a new and empty file. Same problem. Every few bars the timing catches. I then disabled everything in Jamstix including accents, fills, kicks and snares, everything but hats, just to make sure the timing is off. And the same still happens: every few bars, there's a slight catch.
Any ideas what this problem might be? |

I am assuming Sonar does not send needed VST information if no audio input is required by a plugin. Concerning the timing: please describe a bit more what it odes. Does it skip a beat? How is it related to bar/beat position? Could you also send me the file rzdlog.txt from My Documents\Jamstix 2? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

what i did is to enable midi output only in the mixer page and later i disabled it.
Samplitude crashed immediatly. |

You can temporarily add the line:
NoSubHostLoad=1
to jamstix3.ini (General section) to suppress the BFD load. See if the project loads and if so, you can then reload BFD into it or switch to BFD driving via MIDI vs. subhosting which may be more stable for you. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks for your quick answer!
I couldn't find out how to set the midi input of the bfd-track to the jamstix-output when using midi-out-only.
I enabled midi-out in the plug-in menu and midi-out recording in the bfd-track.
But no sound. |

You need to enable MIDI output for JS3 in the plugin insertion menu. Sonar then gives you a 'Jamstix' option in the MIDI input selection for a track. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| Ralph, Thanks for the awesome program. A suggestion... In future version 4, perhaps a bit more hat manual control? I almost always use Jamstix classic to program the groove. I found out the hard way that hard mapping of the hi hat is a problem and it only seems to like the variable mapping. With that said there are reoccurring hat hits in a groove. If there is a way to keep a few manual hits and let JS choose the rest that would very cool. Just a suggestion for the future. I use JS as a midi only drum brain and BFD. The combination is great. |

Can you elaborate a bit more on what you'd like to see with the hats? _________________ Ralph Zeuner
