Hi -

I'd like to control the overall volume of my drums, in my current project I'd like them to stay about the same throughout, whether the JS2 brain has generated a gentle drum part or a wild and crazy one.

I Jam with no input, using a MIDI automation velocity track to let the brain know how crazy to get. So, if the automation velocity is 127, JS2 appropriately knows not to hold back; but if it's 40, JS2 knows some gentle sidesticks and fewer loud crashes would be appropriate. So far, so good, and all very nice!!

What I think I'm noticing though is the output volume seems to also vary with the style (which, as above, JS2 has generated from the MIDI input automation velocity curve).

What I mean is, if the automation velocity sent to the brain to guide its jam is 127, not only is the drumming style wilder than at 40, but it's louder also. That's OK, but in this project I'd like to change it so that the overall drum level is even, and I can't figure out how.*

I've tried recording the JS2 output to a MIDI track, then turning around and using that MIDI track to drive JS in "Drum Module" mode, thinking if I varied the output velocity of that track I could make parts louder or softer (in detail: changing the routing of that track so the output is JS2/no input, putting JS2 in drum module mode, and then automating the MIDI track's velocity). It was a surprise to me that JS2 doesn't seem to be paying attention to the velocity track of the MIDI channel that is driving it in "Drum Module" mode. ??

* The only work around I've been able to come up with is messy - "riding" the power knob as I record the jam to a MIDI track. This is hard to do, especially with a mouse and a knob!

I'm sure I'm missing something here, and also that I probably made a hash of trying to explain my situation, sorry. But can someone help me out here please?

Thanks!

Use the 'Min Dyn' slider to raise the dynamic floor of the drums.

Ralph - thanks for your reply!! I tried what you said and it works fine on the first go round.

I had erroneously filed away the "Min Dyn" control for when I wanted to put a floor on how "unaggressive" (in terms of the kind of hits, not true loudness) the JS2 brain would generate drum hits, no matter how low the volume or MIDI velocity presented to it.

Is there anything that does that function? I looked at the "Min Vol" and "Max Vol" knobs on the velocity map in the kit sound editor, but it looks like that is for one drum in a kit, not a track in full. I can't tell if that can be automated from the manual.

Thanks -

With "aggressiveness", do you mean the strength with which the drums are hit or what the drums are playing?

Hi - Thanks for your reply, Ralph!

I knew when I typed it that aggressiveness was too vague, sorry. I meant "what the drums are playing" more than how hard they are playing.

Thanks!

If you have 'Reduction' enabled in the brain then the drums will change their style based on song power (except for 'Charlie').

OK, great Ralph, I'll check it out!

I use Charlie a lot, as a beginner ... if I want that feature, should I choose a different drummer?

Thanks again!

Yes, pick a different drummer (i.e. James Stix) to check this out.
