I've got a couple more issues and feature requests:

1. A lot of the time, when I change the groove weights or load a groove weight, even included ones, it is changed back to default as soon as I hit play; and then when I go back to parts where I had successfully changed the groove weight, and it composed based on that, the groove weight will have changed back to default, and if I recompose that part it will follow the default groove weight.

2. When I have a kick one 16th after another with both placed on the same limb, the one preceding will be much softer. This makes sense for fast tempos, but shouldn't Jamstix take into account tempo when factoring in humanizing velocity changes like this? At low tempos the difference in velocity between two kicks on the same foot in sequence should be smaller.

3. I'd like to see some sort of brain slider for emphasis based on groove weights. This is taken care of for hihats/rides/etc, but I'd like to see this for doing custom tom grooves, among other things. The built-in tom groove feature is a bit limited, so I usually just program them in the bar editor, but then the velocities are a bit flat.

4. John has a triplet kick accent, but this is styled after the Bonzo's loose triplet style (and nails it perfectly, I might add). Modern metal drummers usually use much tighter triplet kicks, so I'd like to see a triplet-kick accent like this for Danny, Mike, and Jason, the ones who use such accents frequently in real life. Also, it'd be nice if the Modern Metal style had a triplet slider in the kick section, such that when both it and the complexity slider were all the way up, it would play a constant triplet-kick pattern, as is not uncommon in this style.

5. A lot of cymbals seem to be out of reach for some reason, for instance when playing a hats groove it will tend not to play Crash 2 accents on the first beat, or Crash 1 accents on the first beat when playing a ride groove. Crash 3 and 4 accents are always hit regardless. Drummers like Mike or Jason in real life seem to effortlessly flail all over rather monstrous kits, so I don't see why it can't seem to hit these on the first beat of a bar.

6. I've asked about this one before, but I'd like to see an equivalent of the classic grid available for the accents tab; a lot of times you want accents placed only in specific places in each bar, but going through and placing them manually is a pain. The options available for snare ghosts, for instance, don't always match up with the groove, but having a grid to specify where accents may be placed would fix that.

7. Finally, I've asked about this one before too, but it would be great to have the option for a separate kick & snare grid for each core bar of a part; many grooves aren't made up of essentially the same bar repeated consistently, but might be say 2 or 4 somewhat different bars repeated. You can of course edit the core bars in the bar editor, and then it will repeat with those changes, but this would make it easier.

What version of Jamstix and host is this with?

I'll see about adding tempo consideration for this feature.

Have you tried the 'Heavy Hits' option in the tom groove? It operates on groove weights.

We're still not sure about this but are thinking in that arena.

2.5.2b1 and Sonar 7 PE.

I wasn't saying that the built-in tom groove produces flat velocities. I just find that generally too busy and limited in the variety of grooves it can produce, so I usually program tom grooves by hand in the bar editor- but then of course the velocities will be fairly flat, excluding limb transition logic and such. There are other times when I might find it easiest to program a groove entirely in the bar editor, and these would be well served by having such a groove-weight-emphasis slider as well.

Hey, I know you must be working hard on JS3, but I was just wondering if there was anything new on the groove weight issue? I can send you a song file it it would help, it's kindof preventing me from working on a song.

Would it be better to send you the Jamstix song file or the SONAR project file? This occurs with the 2.5.2 official update, and also with both Sonar 7 and 8.

I loaded the file "I am the wind 2009-08-23" and I see default groove weigths. Please tell me the steps you'd take to get a custom weight so I can duplicate it exactly.

Well for instance at bar 57, I would click the 'P' button at the top of the bar editor so that changes to groove weight affect just that part, then go to Groove Weights- Load, and load Triplet.j2d. The weight icons at the top of the bar editor (i.e. large square for heavy, smaller one for neutral, just the dash for syncopated) change accordingly. Then if I hit play after that, they just change back. If I instead hit compose and then play, the icons still change back to default and the part is recomposed with default groove weights. Generally I can change the groove weights once in a song and have it recompose successfully based on the new weights, however the icons will still go back to default, and I will be unable to change groove weights for any further part and have it stick.
