|
|
I have been having issues for a while opening Sonar 8 with Jamstix2. Today I finally took the time to try and characterize this issue and here is what I found.
I Built a 1 track project with only Jamstix2 2.5.2 in it. There are no other FX or instruments in the project.
I carfully tried all these scenarios multiple times and the symptoms were 100% repeatable. (Note in Sonar you can insert soft synth in track pane effects bin, or in synth rack - synth rack does not work - this is what i found)
1) Insert Jamstix2 Soft Synth in an audio track effects bin. Sonar will close project and it will re-open project with no issues from desktop using project icon or using Sonar desktop short cut icon and subsequent dialogues. I tried multiple different drummers and kits in Jamstix2, no change. SO in effect, Jamstix2 in audio track effects bin works.
2) Insert Jamstix2 soft synth in synth rack and it immediately crashes Sonar 8 when you try to re-open Sonar from desk top project icon or using Sonar short cut. It does not matter if you insert Jamstix2 with multiple outputs, single output, stereo or mono, or using track folders or not. I tried multiple different drummers and kits in Jamstix2, no change. Once Jamstix2 is in the synth rack, you cannot re-open the project with a double-click or right click --> open with..., etc. Instant Sonar APPCRASH.
Now here is the interesting thing, Sonar allows you to open a project in 'safemode'. Safe mode is specifically designed to find the offending plug in if Sonar will not open. After you insert Jamstix2 in soft synth, and then open Sonar project using safemode, if you then say yes to open project with Jamstix2 in the safe mode dialogue, the project opens. (remember Jamstix2 is the only FX or instrument in this single track project)
SO in effect, in order to use Jamstix2 in a synth rack in Sonar8, I have to always open Sonar in safemode and say yes to insert Jamstix2.
And I always use Jamstix2 in a synth rack because I use multiple outputs.
Has any one else come across this ??
I am in a fully updated version of Vista (SP2) and fully updated version of Sonar 8.

We recommend using Jamstix in the synth rack and not in an audio bin. Please repeat the crashing and then immediately send me the file rzdlog.txt from My Documents\Jamstix2. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

There is no Jamstix crash log or Sonar crash log, it fails right out of the gate.

What folder is Jamstix installed in? Do you have any other hosts to test with? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Actually the issue is that Sonar will not open from scratch with Jamstix2 in a project. As long as Sonar is opened and stays open there is no issue.
My work around is to open Sonar first with a project that has no jamstix, and then once Sonar is opened, you can open your sonar/jamstix project.
A bit of a pain, but it is 100% predictable.
I miss being able to just double click the project icon on my desktop, but now that I know Jamstix, I cannot live without it!!

I just tried it and yes, if I open a cwp file with JS2 in it, it crashes. However, I never open projects like that. I don't understand what you mean about opening a project without JS2 in it either.
I have a copy of the Sonar start icon on my desktop (if you don't have one there, just right-click/drag the Sonar icon to desktop from start menu and select "copy here"). Sonar opens with no project loaded. Then I just click "File" on the top menu bar, and in the drop down menu, there's "New", "Open" and "Print Setup", and under that is the list of all recently saved projects. That's how I've always opened projects. Just open Sonar (blank-no project) and choose the project from the "File" menu. That'd be a lot quicker than opening a separate project file in order to start it up!!! Your saved projects are listed right under "file".
I couldn't even imagine saving my projects to the desktop! I much prefer a project folder that I never have to look at...but that's just me. |

Yes different strokes....
But that is what i got used to, opening Sonar from project folder on my desktop by clicking on the project icon. ( I have all my cwp and audio files in a single desktop folder....makes it handy for back up jobs etc.)
And this always worked in previous version of Jamstix, it was only in the last few versions that this stopped working. ( I won't call it a feature....this is basic Windows program functionality)
I am not too concerned, as you say other ways of opening Sonar are just as effective. But the first time I tried to re-open a project (after upgrading Jamstix) using my tried and true method and could not get Sonar to open other than using safe-mode, I was a little concerned. |

this question is for the OP.
Are you running Sonar 64 or 32 bit? do you have the sonar patches installed?
If you have usb midi device try unplugging it and see if that corrects the crashing. _________________ Tom |

Am running 32 bit.
Am now running 8.5.1 ( so it is the latest ) And issue still persists.
I do not have USB midi device. All the same I turned off audio and midi FW i/f and that did not help either.

I am alse seeing lots of crashes in Sonar due to JS 2. Sometimes while it opens, other times while I close Sonar. My "Reliability History" is littered with Sonar crashes. I use JS2 2.5.2, Sonar 8.5.1 PE, Windows 7 x64.
Below is a typical crash report from the Reliability monitor:
