|
|
I've just installed Jamstix 2.2.1 as local Administrator, tested and everything seems fine -- installed the Paks and entered all the codes etc. I run Cubase 4 and Reaper 2.2 under another account on XP Pro SP2, however ... a "limited user account" or LUA in Microsoft-speak. Under this normal user account, Jamstix no longer loads, even though the audiom8.dll plugin does, indicating that it is not a problem with the path to the plugins. Cubase 4 gives no clues as to the cause, but does add it to the Vst2xBlacklist.xml file; Reaper gives the helpful message "VST scanning error: Plug-in jamstix2.dll executed invalid operation during scanning".
I've checked that the path permissions etc. are correct ... I have a shared VST plugins folder on a seperate partition, and the permissions are Everyone-Full Control. The demo did not have this problem ... worked fine when logged in as a normal user.
Have I missed something or could it be that you have to be logged in as Administrator in order to run Jamstix? (not advisable if you're on the internet at the same time!).
[UPDATE] I RTFM. As per page 47, I added NonAdmin=1 to the General section of jamstix2.ini and this seems to have helped, however every time the plugin loads I get an error message that says: "You need to run the latest Jamstix updater. If you have manually moved the data folder and/or DLLs before, you will need to move the updated files". My installed version is already the latest version 2.2.1, so does that mean I should run the updater anyway? And if I run the updater as Administrator, am I back to square one? I'll try this and report back!
[UPDATE] Doh! Running the 2.2.1 updater as Administrator while the option NonAdmin=1 is still in the jamstix2.ini solved the problem (even though I already have 2.2.1 installed). Nice! Pays to read the manual |

I feel like this must be my fault, but I can't figure it out.
For one thing, my version of the manual (1.7) does not have any info on NonAdmin. Licensed user of Jamstix 2.5 with multiple expansion paks. I do not seem to be able to download a more recent manual.
I'm getting the same problem as the OP. Jamstix works fine when I am logged in as an Administrator (Win XP sp3), but does not produce any sound when logged in as a non-admin on the same computer, same project file.
I tried entering NonAdmin=1 as the last line under the [GENERAL] settings of the jamstix2.ini filebut it does not seem to make any difference.
Any suggestions are most welcome. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but searching didn't seem to turn anything up. |

First off, I recommend running the 2.5.0 updater and then using the 2.5.1 Beta 5 DLL.
Latest manual is here: http://www.rayzoon.com/jamstix2_lib.html
and also in the data\docs\ folder of your JS2 folder.
otherwise, yep: if you then still have the problem, please send me rzdlog.txt from My Documents\Jamstix2 and jamstix2.ini from the JS2 folder. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks for the quick reply, Ralph!
It's a testament to the quality of the product that I've been happily using Jamstix for so long without having to use support, or even consult the updated manual!
Upon re-reading the OP, I realized my problem is a little different. Jamstix WILL load, but does not produce any sound when the account is set to non-admin. When I change the user account to have administrator privileges, the project opens and loads and works happily. Same account, same project (REAPER) and Jamstix shows that I am a licensed user in both cases. I have tried this with the Jamstix2.ini file using both NonAdmin=1 and NonAdmin=0. Getting the same symptom after running the 2.5.0 updater and also using the 2.5.1 beta.
Not sure if those are helpful clues. In any case, I will go ahead and PM you the files. Thanks again. |

I suspect Jamstix cannot its sound data. Please set the permissions on the jamstix2 folder to full access and see if it helps. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Okay, I think I got it sorted.

This was actually my very first guess, and noticing that the plugins folder on my C drive had a green box (partial) check next to "Read Only" under properties, along with all subfolders. I of course cleared that and made sure it was set up as a shared folder.
However, upon double-checking, I saw that it was once again set to partial read-only, as were all subfolders. Every time I cleared the checkbox, the new setting would "take" and apply to all subfolders, but then they would reset back to partial Read-only. Aargh!
Further investigation revealed that one of those bizzaro Windows settings was automatically restricting file access for my convenience. And there is no way to override for any particular folder, it's a global setting. How convenient. In this case it was something called "simple file sharing." This is apparently now enabled by default in Win XP Pro.
For the benefit of anyone in the future, here's what I did...
1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the Advanced Settings section, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
5. Click OK.
THEN, I was able to permanently set the permissions to full access, one folder at a time.
You can read the MS advice here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
For the record, this problem was affecting not only Jamstix but a few other plugins as well, such as BFD and Cakewalk Dimension Pro.
As an aside, anyone using a computer that goes on the internet might want to consider using limited accounts instead of Admin accounts, since it makes it much easier to keep a computer virus- and malware-free. This computer is a new laptop that I am using both for general computing as well as internet etc. Previously I have basically only used dedicated-purpose DAWs for audio and therefore just always logged on as an Administrator, so the issue never came up.
Anyhow, thanks again for the help, and for the great software! |
