Thanks a lot Steve – fantastic pioneering work and very generous of you to share it like this!
That said, I still hope it won't be too long before Jamstix Mac makes its eagerly awaited appearance on the stage…
Thanks again, Steve!
Best,
Joey |

If anyone has any suggestions about how to improve the procedure or document, please let me know and I'll update it. If you have any questions about the procedure, I guess use this thread to discuss.
Note, although this procedure actually works great and once you get it setup the first time its a lot simpler after that, I still view this procedure as complicated, and the flakey nature of crossover products to work in one version and not in another, etc.. This means to me that this is really just a temporary kludge. I am confident that a Mac version of Jamstix will be coming. If anything this procedure might inspire more mac users to take interest in Jamstix, become addicted and create even more demand for a Mac version to be released. But let's see how that works out. |

What are you using for your main macintosh sequencer?
This guide is an example of how to setup Jamstix to use with DP, but if you're using Logic or something else, you can probably make it work as long as it supports external sync.
If you are not using a sequencer and all you want to do is run jamstix alone on a mac, then this guide explains already how to do that, in the earlier sections, just ignore anything related to Digital Performer. |

| Ive tried this and have most working except shipping it {audio, midi data} back over to the osx DAW which in my case is Reaper . Can i possibly do this ? Send Jamstix info on windows Reaper {Crossover Games, Jack}, back over to Reaper on mac? I think im having a problem getting my head around the routing , setting up aggregate , midi recieves etc...Any help or otherwise would be appreciated. Could Garage band maybe fit into this for simplicitys sake??Ive looked into rewire etc.. How do you set up the receive channels on the mac side of your Daw??And what about the Jack plugin that can be used inside your Daw? Until we get a mac release of Jamstix ill keep tinkering. |

Reaper should certainly handle getting all the audio back from Jack without any problem whatsoever, but I'm not that familiar with Reaper to be able to tell you how to configure audio devices, but I would suggest going into Reaper preferences, under audio devices and make sure the Jack audio ports are enabled there. Regarding midi, same should apply, but I found midi to be a bit finicky and I had to fool around with enabling and disabling virtual midi ports until they started functioning. I believe that is a problem with crossover, not the other way around.
I did not try garage band, but maybe I will.
I also do not think Rewire is going to work, so don't waste your time with that.
I also was not able to get the jack plugin working, so I can't help you there. Also, I don't think that is what you want to use. You would use that if you were using an FX plugin (ie, like a reverb or something) that you need to send from a plugin slot in your OSX DAW and receive back the results there. |

| Thanks for the response. Yes i have Jack enabled as the audio device , its the midi device im having a problem with . Maybe its my system settings?? Im useing a toneport as my Usb souncard. If you Have any luck with garage band let me know as that could probably be used as a template for other Daws, also most people with mac have garage band.maybe you could show me an example of routing just a simple vsti from the windows side back to the mac. I get sound from either side but independantly not one routing to the other {I hope this makes sense}.Ive heard people haveing problems with the Wine Asio for reaper in this set up, could be my problem here. What about this aggregate device setup???Thanx again , im determined to get this working Jamstix is the one thing i miss about windows.it was also be nice to do this all with reaper as they now have the mac beta . |

wuzzup, if you don't have a specific mac sequencer that you want to use you can easily host Jamstix on Crossover using VSTHost, EnergyXT, etc..you don't even need a mac sequencer or any of that fancy midi routing. The only reason for the midi routing is if you have a main mac based sequencer that you are using to record all your tracks and you want to syncronize it with jamstix somehow. Its not a requirement to use Jamstix alone on a mac. Worst case you can run jamstic, develop your grooves, export the midi files and then import them into the sequencer of your choice. Its no ideal, but its better than nothing.
Unfortunately, it took me a lot of time to get DP all figured out and I won't have time to get any other combinations working. Please take the information in that guide and use it as best you can. If you get it working with something other than DP, then please let us all know what and how you did it.
Like I said, I found the virtual midi ports to be not handled great by crossover. Seems like I had to have something playing while enabling them in the windows Reaper host in order for them to work correctly, Honestly, I don't know exactly what I did, I just futzed around enabling and disabling, while stuff was playing and they eventually started working, But I did notice after I got them working that if I closed the software and relaunched it again and opened a saved project with the virtual midi ports, it would work without fiddling. Dunno what else to tell you. Its finnicky to say the least.
Also, DP has built in virtual midi port abilities, with just about everything else you have to either use IAC or Midi Patchbay or some other way to create virtual midi ports and I have absolutely no idea whether they will work, someone else will have to get it working and let us know. I actually did try to use both Midi Patchbay and MidiPipe to create virtual midi ports between DP and Crossover and never could get them to work, so its possible they don't work, but I didn't spend that much time trying either.
In theory they should all be using Apple CoreMidi to create the virtual midi ports so there is no reason i can think of why it should not work with virtual midi ports created in those other places, but I suspect it has to do with crossover recognizing them as activated ports or not...something like that. |

I have heard down the grapevine that there is some possibility that someone could create a VST wrapper under the wine project and that would be so cool if they did, but I suspect Ralph will have a mac version of Jamstix way before then, so that is the best thing to hope for. A lot of linux people would be really happy about that.
Until then, just keep futzing around until you find a combo that works here. I am sure there are other things besides DP that will work. |

Of course, the Crossover solution will only work on Intel machines.
Hopefully, when Jamstix Mac is released, it will be a UB version also supporting PPC G5 machines.
Happy New Mac Year to Rayzoon and the Forum!

| I use reaper mostly on the mac side, i was hopeing i could drive Addictive drums from Jamstix. I was able to set up Iac ports that were recognized inside Reaper Mac and windows but im not getting any data transfer must be the Crossover. Audio streaming through Jack is no problem, which is really cool for some other windows vsts basically working as a wrapper but just for audio transfer. this is all new and interesting to me and i appreciate the devolopment and research of people like yourself. This is still quite an acomplishment. Since moving to mac the hardest thing for me has beeen the loss of all the great free vsts available for windows only. pat yourself on the back my man you helped me at least acomplish some of this. Also where would the midi files be saved to on the Crossover if i just saved them from reaper?Im haveing trouble locateing . as those files could than be used in conjunction with Addictive drums if i could find them . Thankyou... |

Well if you like Reaper than the nice thing is that you could use Jamstix entirely inside Reaper(win32) under crossover and compose your drum parts any way you want entirely there. Then just export the midi files from Jamstix or I am betting that you could actually save the whole Reaper project in there and then reopen it in Reaper(OSX).
Under crossover the "virtual c drive" is located on your Mac drive, I referred to the location in my document. So you can find your exported midi files there. When you export from Jamstix you can also navigate to other paths that are outside of the virtual C drive and save them that way too.
Forget about drag and drop.
But I would fool around also with getting some midi playing through IAC and enable/disable the midi ports in Reaper(win32) until they seem to start working while the midi is playing over those ports. |

Except I just realized you want to drive AD with Jamstix, in which case you need the IAC midi to work.
Keep playing with it. If I get time I will try to do a Reaper to Reaper test working if I can. |
