Oh by the way, I found out another new thing that just came out, someone may want to try it out.

Basically, these guys made a new hardware box for hosting VST's. They also came out with some free software that can audition your vst's on your computer before loading into the hardware, but the really cool thing is that they are making that audition software for PC, Mac and linux, which basically means you can host a windows vst dll on Mac and Linux without using Wine, their little host does all the wrapping for you and just hosts the underlying VST directly.

THey have released the windows version of this software already, and supposedly a beta version for the mac out in a couple weeks.

Tried Reaper. It doesn't work. I lost count how many times I froze the program and was unable to start it again without completely reinstalling my CrossoverMac bottle from scratch.

Seems like its having problems with virtual midi ports too. Very tempermental. Much too complicated. Not the right solution.

I'm pretty much ready to give up in syncing jamstix to a mac sequencer. Wasted way too much time on it. I hope ralph ports the plugin and then I can use it again that way. I still at least can work out some drum beats, I just can't easily do it sync'd up to other music...sadly. I suppose I can get an old PC somehow hooked up to run Jamstix inside Sonar or something and send the midi over the network to the other machine to jamstix and then midi back to my main host. More latency that way, but it might at least work, I will try later.

Thanks for your efforts, Dewdman... it also helps to know what not to try.

I have run Reaper with Jamstix fairly well, but I have to be careful what audio device I use. If it crashes, next time you run it use the icon that says "Show audio configuration on startup". Even WaveOut seems to be OK.

I have not been able to send MIDI, over the IAC driver or ReaStream (the Reaper plugin in sender). I haven't sent audio either, except through a separate networked Windows machine. Even a VM can't seem to do this.

I think the key is to render in Reaper Windows (via whatever machine), then open the project in Reaper Mac - the Jamstix VST goes offline of course but the audio is still there. If you render keeping the MIDI in another track you can even go back and use JS in drum module mode to change the existing song.

Crossover is a bit frustrating, though pleasant when it does work.

well at that point, EnergyXT works much better. EnergyXT actually works very very well. the only downside is that it can not send or receive midi clock to sync up with another sequencer. Supposedly Reaper could do that, but if Reaper can't deal with the IAC midi buss or virtual midi ports in order to send that midi clock sync, then its all a moot point. At which point EnergyXT is much lighter weight, has not crashed on me even once and works totally great otherwise.

I am looking into one other possibility. Supposedly there may be some plugins that can run inside EnergyXT which can SEND MTC sync type data out over midi. If that's true I might be able to have Digital Performer be the slave and EnergyXT can be the master (while working with jamstix). Its worth a shot.

Thanks for the tip about the audio configuration on start, noted. I give up on Reaper though for this task.

Tried a few different very old vst's I could find that are designed to do nothing else but send midi clock and sync info over midi, derived from whatever the VST plugin can get from the host to determine tempo and location, etc. None of them worked. Seemed like a good idea.

Dunno, I'm out of ideas.

Hi
live 7 has external sync.I have lite version that does not have but when you switch to demo mode it becomes available .It just doesn't have saving and exporting .But it works for me I don't save with live I save with jamstix. The demo never expires.I just record the output direct to cubase. With quick control function in cubase I control everything from cubase.(tempo changes and automation)
peace

I was considering using Parallel's Desktop to run Jamstix inside of Ableton, then route the midi to OSX using MidiOverLAN CP.

Has anyone tried such a setup?

parellels and VMware don't work very well, there is a lot of latency and excessive CPU use. Wine works better.

Just for kicks, I also tried to sync up the OSX version of Reaper with Digital performer and that worked flawlessly over a virtual midi port. Unfortunately i can't host Jamstix in the OSX version of Reaper. The Win32 version of reaper under wine does not sync up with digital performer though. It can see the virtual midi port and all that, but something is not registering with that...possibly a Wine problem.

I've noticed on EnergyXT that sometimes I had to engage midi tracks in the setup screen while something was playing or else it would not take. once I did that it would take. I am thinking somehow Wine is blocking the midi data from getting out of Reaper.win32.wine over to Digital perform in order to sync. Just a guess.

Houston, we may have ignition...

If you start Reaper.win32 playing and then while its playing and sending some midi data out of jamstix, go into the Reaper Options, go to midi devices and enable the virtual midi port you intend to use to send the sync data to your main DAW (ie, DP, Logic, etc).

That did it, I now have sync. I still have to figure out how to get the midi out from Jamstix to also route over there, but I will say something here when I have it working.

Yep, somehow I got it all working. I have to run to the gym now, but tonight I am going to write up a guide for this and hopefully it will be good enough to get pinned here. I think the key to making virtual midi work with Crossover products is that you have to have some midi data playing when you enable the midi ports in Reaper.win32. I had to hunt and peck to get this working, and sometimes it didn't seem to work and then I would hear a midi trigger a drum sound and all of a sudden working and forever after that working. I still have to play around more so that I can figure out exactly what I did, but for now I will just made the guide and if anyone can figure out exactly how to methodically enable virtual midi ports to work under Crossover, then we can document that. but in the meantime, this works. 100%. Reaper+Digital Performer, in sync with jamstix2. I recorded the midi tracks out of jamstix into digital performer and played them back in DP, they sounded tight. I know audio can route over with JackOSX, so there it is....complete solution.

It does take a fair bit of CPU for all this, but its doable.

I'll make a guide either tonight or this week. Don't let me forget

Your tenecity and inventiveness are astounding. Respect!

However, please don't make this contraption work so well that Ralph can take it as an excuse to put Jamstix Mac on a backburner… Wink

I went under Mac OSX past few months ... My main regret is not able to use Jamstix. I am Numerology2 user which works only on AU format software plugin ...
A version for Mac OSX Jamstix VST & AU would be great news for all those who use Apple computers to compose their music ...
I think many of us wish that Ralph can quickly propose a genuinely compatible version of JS with Mac OSX ... Other solutions are bold tinkering too uncertain to be adopted by those who want to work without taking complex paths for only one software ...
