I'm trying to create some grooves that are like Dummy era Portishead or other trip hop. I'm having trouble getting the groove right and can't seem to get even close with anything but manual editing -- which I am really bad at. I feel like everything is coming up way to square.

Any clues on how I might go about this? Preferred drummer? Midi file to import?

I'd really appreciate any help.

For instance, the rhythm in Glory Box. That's about as simple -- seemingly -- as it gets, but it's killing me getting it to groove.

I did mess with it quite a bit after I posted in frustration, and had a LITTLE bit of success with this.

It is very sparse for the most part. about 58-59 BPM, kick on one and three, snare on two, and a snare hit leading to the kick -- almost a grace note, but not quite that short. Sometimes there's a second kick (on the "and" of three) and the fills at transitions are almost all snare work.

To get it to close working, I am running it as 118BPM across two bars with the "Half Time" button clicked. To get the grace snare note in the right place, it's sitting on the "and" of four with the 16th shuffle on and the shuffle control moved over enough to it is swung a bit.

I tried it at 59bpm with the shuffle on and off and with the grace note on the "uh" of 4, but the timing never worked.

The problem now, is, that I can't get the fills working at all. If I get a brain set up to use the snare only, it almost always tends to play the fills twice as fast as I expect, or it won't do the syncopation like I expect. It's like it suddenly goes from Bristol 1996 to London, 1969 and gets all rock and roll for a half bar. I'm kind of hoping to get the humanizing of varying fills but avoid programming whole songs like this note for note.

I had the best success with James Stix, BTW. Charlie was passable, but neither worked for fills.

Sorry if I'm a little confusing. I'm a musician, but NOT a drummer by any means. I appreciate any and all advice.

Here is what I would do:

- set BPM to around 110-120
- use '8th Rock' style with kick complexity at 15%
- turn on 8th shuffle and set shuffle to 100%
- turn on 'Halftime'
- load 'James Stix' drummer
- in FILL tab, set 'Toms' under 'Focus' to 0% and 'Simplify' to 100%

This will get you close. If you need the precise kick behavior and 2-bar snare scheme from 'Glory Box' then you'll need to hand-edit in 8th shuffle mode at the same BPM and then use 'Turn Groove Into Style' in the bar editor menu.

This is close to what I've worked out in the last couple of days.

I wasn't using 8th rock style though with the kit at 15%. I'll give that a try and it might make for the last key. I'll work on it in the next day or two and report back, in case anyone new searches for trip-hop in the future.

Thanks a lot for the advice. While a touch frustrating, I'm learning a lot about the program through this and it's helping me tune my other stuff that much more quickly.
