| Is there a way to automate the power knob within JS2? There are some songs I'd like to start with reduced power...drums kinda layed back and then increase power to harder snare in the chorus, and lay back again in the verses. |

Two ways:
a) Right-click on the power knob and assign a MIDI controller to it
or
b) Use the 'Power Level' VST automation parameter of Jamstix _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I looked in the contebts page to see if there was anything on automation and did not see anything. |

'Power Level' is explained in the section 'VST Automation' on Page 46.
The MIDI control is explained in the section 'MIDI Remote Control' on page 18. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I read the manual on page 18 & 46 about midi & vst automation. What I read was that it can be done...but nothing on how to actually link the power knob to an automation envelope to accomplish the deed. Any more advice....???
I'm using cakewalk's MC4 as the host.
I right click on the power knob and I see function = velocity and controller = power. what do I do to connect this with an envelope in my host. |

i'm using mc3 but it should work similarly.
with your jamstix settings like you indicated, go to a midi channel in music creator assign the output to js.
right click on the midi track and go to envelopes. select midi. then in the dropdown select the last one (i can't recall the name, i'm away from my studio machine right now). anyways it's the vst automation option and it will have on the dropdown lists the available parameters that can be controlled with the envelope. iirc you will see power level, velocity, and one other that i can't recall. choose power level.
when you click enter you should see a line on the midi track. this is used to draw the control envelope for the track. right click on the line and you should be able to add nodes and other misc. functions. add as many nodes as you need to bring the power level up and down for song parts as and where you need it. might want to check the cakewalk help for more info on this.
one thing i discovered is the power hand setting that might need to be reduced so that when the envelope is maxed out it will bring about the desired change. in my case the ride cymbal wouldn't come in until i did this. it wanted 127 as a setting and for some reason music creator's envelopes would only max out at 126. reducing the power hand setting in js solved this issue.
the power level feature in js is one of it's coolest feature.

Please note that right-clicking on the power knob allows you to assign a MIDI controller for a MIDI envelope or real-time control. e-man's excellent instructions deal with VST automation (not MIDI). You do not need to do the right-click/assign if you want to use VST automation. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I followed g-man's instructions and everything was just like you said. NRPM was the unknown and when I clicked it power popped into the next box. When I hit playback after inserting the envelope with nodes...the power knob does not move. I also went to the options screen and checked to see that the control channel there matched the channel in the envelope window as well. no luck.
Ralph...I understand that I do not need to right click on the power knob to use VST automation.....but I do not understand what I DO need to do to get it working. |

That is all there is to do. Create an evelope in the host on 'Power Level' and that's it. What jam mode is Jamstix in? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

just for the sake of being thorough, what does your envelope line look like? it should look like a horizontal zig-zag, with the line pulled low for low power, pushed high for high...well, i think you get the picture.
if the track output is set to JS and the envelope is assigned properly, i can't think of anything else to check.
if i get a chance this afternoon, i'll take a look at my setup and make sure i'm not missing anything.
later...
p.s.
by the way, it's e-man not g-man. i'm a good guy, just not that kind. |

I finally got it figured out. Seems it works...as far as showing the knob move when it's hooked up and fully functional.
Now I just have to work with it some more.
Thanks for all your help. |

I'm not as good as Guitarhacker, so I don't got it yet.
1) In MC4 I have a MIDI track (the little MIDI plug symbol). I created a Power Level envelope on the track and assigned it to Channel 9.
2) I set the Jam Channel and Control Channel in JS2 to 9 to match the envelope in MC4.
3) I added two nodes in MC4 at the beginning of the chorus, with one set higher than the other to hopefully get an increase in intensity at that point.
But the knob doesn't move when it crosses the nodes and the intensity level doesn't change. What am I doing wrong? Is it the 'Jam' setting in JS2? I tried changing it but it doesn't seem to make a difference. |
