|

Hi,
Is it possible to use Jamstix 2 brain with no sample loaded, but midi mapping of DFHS without sub-hosting it?
I’m using Sonar 7 and most of my current Midi Drum files are in the GM Extended Mapping for DFHS. I’m assuming that Jamstix 2 can output the midi in the GM Extended Mapping for DFHS, so I can save the midi file and later load up DFHS and it will play correctly.
I’ve been reading the manual for Jamstix 2, but still can’t figure out how to load a Drum Map or how to set one up inside Jamstix 2.
If someone can give me a brief tutorial on how to accomplish this it would be much appreciated.
Eventually I'd like to figure out the steps on how to sub-host DFHS to compare the workflow, but I’m thinking not sub-hosting might be the better option. I've got DFHS setup inside Sonar using Mono Outputs and not sure how to setup Jamstix 2 and the mono outputs. I'm going to read the manual again in the meantime, but any tips would be great to get me on the right track.
Thanks! JD... |

Try this: Check "MIDI Out Only" in the mixer window and then load a DFHS kit. |

Hi Doc,
Thanks for the reply!
I tried that yesterday and I'm able to get it to work somewhat, but the mappings appear to be closer to Superior vs GM Extended. Which is also good, but I'd like to have both options.
I need to figure out how to create my own Drum Maps inside Jamstix for the different DFHS Kits that I use and then save them. I only see one map for DFHS inside Jamstix 2. Does that sound right or should there be more maps for DHHS included in the Data Folder that I might be missing?
I do have a GM Extended Drum Map for Sonar with my other drum midi files. I guess what I'm trying to do is to create the same mappings inside Jamstix that I can recall, so that when I output a midi track from Jamstix it is compatible with that mapping inside Sonar.
Does that approach make sense or am I totally loss on the best way to do this.
Thanks! JD... |

I recommend you load the DFHS map into Jamstix and change the MIDI keys for the sounds to match your specific DFHS kit, then save it as a new Jamstix kit for future use. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph,
Just to make sure I understand the procedure for creating my own DFHS drum maps.
1) I would load the DFHS Sonar Kit - TPC16 that is included inside the Jamstix Kit Screen.
2) I then would go inside the Kit Edit Screen of Jamstix to change the "Key" to match the sound for my specific DFHS Kit.
3) Then save it for future use.
It seems like when I do Step #2 I'm missing DFHS kit pieces and was only able to select the kit sounds from the Jamstix library. Is there a limit on how many DFHS kit pieces I can have mapped inside of Jamstix or is there a way to add more?
The DFHS Kit that I'm trying to map has 22 kit pieces to it.
Thanks! JD... |

Ralph,
I'm on my Mac and not near my Daw, but I'll go over those steps and post what I find out. Since my PC isn't online and in a different location maybe I can take a few screen shots and post them. I'm sure it's probably user error on my part, but sure would like to understand it better.
Thanks for the help! JD... |

Ralph,
I was able to get further with creating my own midi maps for both DFHS and GM Extended. Though I still need to get the percussion mapped out correctly, but I think I've got a better understanding of it. I'm pretty new to all 3 programs Jamstix/DFHS/Sonar, so I still trying to learn all the in's and out's.
Regarding the missing files I guess it's probably normal. For example, the Snare Rimshot and Snare Brushing both say Subhost Not Loaded.
I was able to change Snare Rimshot Key Map to "G#0" and it appears to work properly with DFHS even though it says Subhost Not Loaded. The DFHS Snare Brushing Key Map "D0" still plays no sound from DFHS, but maybe that sample doesn't get loaded since I'm using Drumsticks instead of Brushes inside DFHS.
I do have a question regarding mono outputs when hosting DFHS inside Jamstix 2. I did a search on the forum and I've read that you need to add 'StereoOutputs=0' to the ini file in the [General Section]. I don't seem to have a General Section when I open the ini file, but have BFD, Addictive Drums, and Drummer.
Does this info only apply to Jamstix 1 or is it needed with Jamstix 2? I did notice the "Allow Stereo Outputs" on the option screen and is unchecking that is all that's needed to get mono outputs. Inside Sonar I normally have DFHS setup with 14 mono outputs.
Thanks! JD... |

That line only applies to Jamstix 1.

Yes, that is all you need. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph,
I was able to get it to work with the mono outputs. Once I get things setup how I want I'll start learning more about all the brain features.
Thanks for your help and the excellent support! JD... |

Hi Ralph,
I'd like to make a Jamstix Drum Map to use inside Sonar for easier viewing and editing inside the Sonar Piano View.
Do you have a Jamstix 2 Drum Map already available for Sonar? If not, do you have a list available of all the default Jamstix mappings, so that one drum map could be made for use with all the kits?
Thanks! JD... |

Go to the kit window, load the JS2 standard kit and use 'Show Key Map' in the kit menu to see all sounds and their key mappings. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph,
You know I found the "Show Key Map" after posting, but I then started to question which Kit had the most default mappings to use as my guideline for creating the drum map. I'll go ahead and use the JS Standard Kit as you recommended and give that a try.
Thanks for the quick reply! JD... |

Hi Ralph,
I think I got things worked out with the drum maps and can start learning more about the other features in Jamstix. I just wanted to share a tip for Sonar users that had me confused that might be helpful.
I noticed when I was working on the drum maps that Sonar doesn’t show the correct midi note info inside the Piano Roll View. For example, the Bass Drum Map C1 shows up as C3 inside Sonar, but it still responds if it was C1 when playing back.
To fix this and have the notes show up correctly inside the PRV all you have to do is go inside the Options/Global/General Tab and find "Base Octave for Pitches" and set it at -2.
Anyway, I hope that might help someone else.
Thanks! JD... |
