any kind soul care to give a primer on how to use Cubase 4 automation and Jamstix 2?

I am pretty new to using automation for VSTi.

I just got an alphatrack as well, but I will take 1 step at a time Smile

well i did a little more playing around

I see the power automation paramater that I can draw in.

Question though, when I play JS and click the "W" button and move the power knob, Cubase doesnt seem to record anything. If I play back and click "R", nothing happens.

If I draw in the automation, then JS responds.

Am I missing something with using the mouse to control the power knob?

Thanks.

Jamstix doesn't support writing of automation, it just reads it. We skipped the writing since host envelopes are much better to use and maintain.

ah, well that explains it! Thanks. As long as I know I am not completely crazy Smile

I have just used the power control so far, next I need to play around with the MIDI controllers.

Does the Power setting get remembered by part (which would drop the need for automation for specific parts)? (At work now and can't test again until 11:00 PM!)

No, it is not stored within JS2. You need to use automation.

In Tracktion (which is the host I use) there is something called "quick parameters". you can assign it to JS power and "record" the moves you make with your mouse. This is a simple workaround for me. Fortunately, I'm sure there is something similar in Cubase (I was showcasing JS to a friend who's using Cubase 4 and I found something similar there).

Thanks for the replies. Makes sense. This was just a case of me not being overly familiar with the functions.

I have owned jamstix since day 1 and am finally trying to use it! (law school and 2 kids during the last 3 years will do that!)

zeoy, I can draw in the automation with the mouse in the automation lane.

JS really is great. I just bought Addictive Drums to go along with BFD2, so as I use it more, hopefully I will be posting more here!

yeah, I know. I was talking about a workaround to record your automation in real time. Something like hit W, let the song play and adjust the power with the "quick parameter" (sorry I don't remember Cubase's terminology here) instead of moving the Power knob of JS (which doesn't write automation data) or drawing the automation with the mouse (which is not real time)
