I'm running into a strange problem that is no doubt user error.

I seem to be unable to output ambiance for any instrument besides chimes. If I load a stock kit, set Audio Outputs to 4, crank up the ambience volume and turn on "Send To Last" - then in Sonar, input an audio channel with JS2 Out 4: Stereo, I get squat. Except for the chimes.

What am I missing?

JS2 outputs are stereo by default so what is output #4 in JS2 is actually outputs #7 and #8 in Sonar.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm working in Sonar 7.02. When I open JamStix audio output, for each channel I see a Left (mono), Right (mono), Stereo. So I have three outputs per JamStix channel.

I've tried a number of configurations. Loading a default stereo kit with four audio outs, I've tried every other channel but 1 and there's no ambiance on any of them. I've actually set JamStix to output 17 Audio Outputs and soloed every channel, but no ambiance.

I can certainly target an instrument to a channel with no problems at all. That works as expected. But no matter what configuration I try, the only instrument that sounds on the last channel is the chimes.

I must be overlooking something, but I just can't figure out what.

Let's do these steps:

- new Sonar project
- add Jamstix 2, make sure 'All audio outputs' option in Sonar dialog is checked
- select 'Jam Session (Rock)' quickstart song
- set 'Send To Last' in Mixer
- play or record the project

You will see the ambience data in the last output in Sonar. If this happens to be #4 in JS2 then make sure the channel is active (green button on top of channel strip in JS2 mixer)

And...

drum roll please...

I get squat.

I get a stereo mix on 1, and absolutely nothing on 2,3 and 4.

Wait, let me revise that.

I did not have the channel buttons on the mixer set to green. When I did, I finally got ambiance.

But my question is, then, if I only have mixer control over four channels and I use 8 channels, how do I activate the ambiance output for those additional channels?

Make sure the channel 4 button is checked as seen in this picture:

If you have more than 4 channels and route ambience to last then it is always active. Channel on/off switches only affect outputs 1-4.

Well that seems to have done the trick.

Oddly though, when I applied the same settings to my project drums I still got nothing.

I wrote out the MIDI track. Created a new instance of JamStix and deleted the original, and set up the kit again. Then it worked great.

I suspect that I'd goofed around with the audio settings so much in the original instance that I got it stuck in some kind of point-of-no-return state. The new one works perfectly.

Thanks much for your expedient help!
