Did you select drummer 'Charlie'? His 'Simplifier' slider removes 16th notes. Set it to 0 and your 16th kicks should play.

correct - my memo was only to remind newbies (like me) that the Brain is the final authority for note construction - I mistakenly thought all manually placed hits always played, but this is not the case
