Is there a way to run (inside Pro Tools) Jamstix so that it'll send its midi data to BFD (and thus basically tell BFD what to play)? I do own the fxpansion 2.0 vst-rtas wrapper (which has enabled me to be able to load Jamstix successfully in Pro Tools). I just can't for the life of me figure out how to configure/wire things so I can get Jamstix to play through BFD I've tried going through a bunch of old posts at this forum (and searching through google) but haven't found any instructions on how to set things up. If anyone could provide some help within the next week or two, it'd greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance, and btw, jamstix looks like it's very, very cool . Thanks again!

Create an Instrument track and then insert Jamstix as a plugin, then under the mapping tab under sounds, Choose external VSTi, select drum module and load BFD. Jamstix will trigger once you arm the track and play to record.

Can anyone let me know, if jamstix can be run on Pro Tools? ....I've seen some vague responses...it runs but not well...doesn't run..etc...etc...Just wondering if anyone can clear that up and give me some direction as to how to set it up the best way on Pro Tools....that would be awesome!

I've been using an FXpansion RTAS wrapper of the demo version of JS2 in ProTools and came across the following issue:

1. Activating the plugin from ProTools causes the UI to paint and then instantly vanish. The only workaround for this is to select a maximised explorer from the taskbar, and then minimise it - ta da - there's the plugin UI again.

2. Using BFD Stereo as a sub hosted plugin seemed to work ok, however you lose all the automation parameters normally available to you

3. I couldn't load BFD All - I think because the number of outputs is too great for JS2.

4. You can't use the MIDI out features to route to an RTAS version of BFD because (AFAIK) Pro Tools doesn't support Midi out from plugins.

Would love to hear of other people's experiences with JS in ProTools as there is no way I'm going back to Cubase.

Hi Ben,
We applied for a license to build a RTAS version of Jamstix but Digidesign has, unfortunately, not obliged so far. The GUI issue with the wrapper is known and we have no work-around or fix for it. You can increase the number of audio outputs in the mixer screen to accommodate BFD All.

You could also try using BFD outside of JS2 with the MIDIRouter.DLL by Sekim:

Load the drummer.dll in it into JS2 and it will route the MIDI from Jamstix 2 to a MIDI port that you can then use in PT to drive BFD. Please note that the demo version of JS2 outputs all notes as kick drum notes.

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for the information. I followed your suggestions and managed to get JS2 using the MidiRouter as a subhost and then routed MIDI to an RTAS instance of BFD.

Great. Now I can control BFD manually via MIDI if I want to (including automation), and can also use JS2.

The only downsides were:

1. ProTools doesn't allow me to pick a MIDI Output as the input for a MIDI Track. I got round this by setting MidiRouter's output to one soundcard's output, wired a MIDI cable to another soundcard's MIDI input, and then used this input for my MIDI track. Works great but would be nice if MidiRouter could send MIDI to a MIDI Input so I didn't need the wire.

2. I managed to get ProTools to crash by using the "repeat loop" function in JS2 and then closing and trying to reopen the plugin.

Other than that, seems pretty stable and completely usable, despite the UI problems.

Will I buy it?

Looks likely, if only I get enough time to read the manual and have a serious play with it.

Looking forward to Digidesign granting you the license to write an RTAS for this too. Have you tried sending them a corporate christmas card. I'm sure they'd love it.
