I had a quick play with the demo yesterday. So far it's been a bit unusable on 6/8 patterns... but that's probably just because I was using it against an existing track (a track at 106 bpm with a very similar rhythm to "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears... especially the off-beat hi-hats)... and probably because I haven't got used to the controls yet.
The question is, though, when using Free Jam driven by MIDI input... if the MIDI stream goes silent, JamStix continues at the last received velocity. Is this by design? Could we have an option for JamStix to treat no MIDI data as though it was receiving very low MIDI velocity?
Also, the "switch" buttons are unclear, it took me a while to work out which way they are switched... specifically the "Jam with MIDI / Jam with Audio" button... I think a proper graphic of a button would be preferable to the existing bordeless grey and white squares.
Does Jamstix actually "know" which measure the host sequencer is set to? Or is it a case of developing patterns that work for 6/8 or 3/4 specifically? If so, I'm a bit confused as to how I'd build my own patterns specifically for 6/8. Any pointers?
Despite that though... I'm having fun with it! |

Okay, Dave, here we go:..

Before I get into detail on 6/8, here are two examples for the Tears For Fears track:
a) You can get something close to it in 4/4 by activating the Shuffle switch on the jam tab. Then set a rhythm like this at 106 BPM or so http://www.rayzoon.com/ewtrtw.jpg
b) Even better is 6/8 (shuffle switch off) with this rhythm
http://www.rayzoon.com/ewtrtw68.jpg at about 160BPM
Note that the screens are a bit different because they are from an unreleased version.

First off, Jamstix knows the time sig of the host.
Now, when we designed the rhythm tab in Jamstix, we had to make it possible to edit and create rhythms and it had to be easy but still yield realistic results. What you see in the demo is the result and it is a compromise. It won't allow you to create any rhythm like a step sequencer but it will create a lot of them much faster, easier and sounding "human". That is the key premise of Jamstix. Some things had to fall on the way side for that, such as explicit 3/4 and 6/8 editing because they would have made the rhythm tab much more complex.
However, you can 'abuse' it to get a lot of 3/4 and 6/8 rhythms going. Look in the library under the 6/8 keyword for some examples.
The final version (or possible a maint. release thereafter) will also have improved 3/4 and 6/8 free jamming logic.
In summary, Jamstix has to balance its complexity to its most common use. 4/4 is and will be maybe 90% or more of what people will do with Jamstix. However, we will continually improve this and we also have another Jamstix module in planning that can handle odd time signatures and other exotics.

Just slide the MIN VELOCITY slider in the jam control panel up. This sets the lowest velocity Jamstix will play in a jam.

We'll improve that.
Thanks for your input and keep it coming! _________________ Ralph Zeuner
