I wrote this a while back, and I'm just now trying to lay drums down to it. I'm pretty sure that its straight 4/4, but the strumming and picking of the guitar changes pretty dramatically, and I'm not sure how the drums should get altered, to complement the change in guitar. What would you guys do?

If your host allows to do that*, create a tempo-map and Jamstix will follow your song.
*As far as I know, you can do that with Sonar 6 & 7, PT and Ableton Live. |

A tempo-map is a way to instruct your host about the timing of an audio track. Basically you tell your host that specific peaks of an audio wave correspond to specific musical beats (eg. measure 2 beat 3 etc.). This way the master tempo of your song changes following the timing of your audio clip.
If you do that, Jamstix will follow the groove and the tempo changes of your song (and you will be able to quantize other tracks according to the timing of the main clip as well).
You can imagine that creating a tempo map can be time consuming; some hosts have good algorithm that allow to speed up dramatically this process but unfortunately I don't know anything about reaper.

| I can see now what the purpose of a tempo map is. Thanks for that video, that really helped me understand it. I also did some research for my host, Reaper, and it does have this capability. Although I don't see how this will help me in this situation. Like I said, I'm pretty sure this track is 4/4 all the way thru, I'm just curious to see how other people would change the drumming to complement. Perhaps a shuffle, or 2 beat? or anything i dont know. |

First I'd make sure that the track is synched with the host so that the beats counted by the host line up with the beats in your track. Use a tempo map if necessary.
Now add Jamstix 2 and choose the 'Jam Sesson (Rock)' quickstart song. Select 'James Stix' as the drummer and let your host play. Ignore the intro and just focus on what the drummer does during the main part. Click on the '8th Rock' style in the song sheet for the main part, hit 'Preview' and audit several styles as the song is playing. This should help you find something that sounds fitting to you.
