Hi,
We are having a hard time finding other musicians in the NC area. Our keyboard player and drummer while top notch are not always available.

We looking to do some smaller gigs with sampled/sequenced tracks. I currently have Sonar 6.2PE but I'm kinda unsure how to go about using it in a live setting. I would like to use my jamstix for the drums because the AI is smart enough to sense dynamics. I'm unsure what's the best way to do this and if theres better host software out there.

Any advice would be appreciated

I posted some info at this thread a while ago:

http://rayzoon.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2335&highlight=

It covers JS1, since I use the Keyboard Jam feature. I'll have to switch to JS2 and use Live Loops soon...

Great info. I think I understond some of that and I'm a geek. Very Happy

The foot pedal thing is a good idea.

The singer I'm backing up is an R&B singer so the drums are key and we would be using them most of the time.

I'm used to setting the tempo and meter in Sonar. Can tou do it in JS? I have JS2.

How would you switch from a 6/8 tune at one tempo and then switch back to a 4/4 at another?

I guess it would be easier to have one file open in Sonar and just jump to different markers with different tempos and time.

OK I did some more reading and before I buy the midi pedal I want to verify that JS works as I expect it does. Is there some way I can send a program change message using Sonar 6.2PE? I've tried several types of events but JS does not change when in liveloops mode. What am I doing wrong?

Have you start to use Liveloops yet? Can you post some experiences and advise? thanks.

For Bassplayer's issue on sending "Program Change", it would be nice if Jamstix could allow changing this to note-ons or CC messages. The PC's are inconvenient in some hosts.

I have not yet converted the setup to JS2, since I'm currently gigging without JS. I'll see if I can try it out, but I probably won't have real gig experience with the JS2 version for a while.

I think I figured out how to send PCs using Sonar and it seems to work as expected. I'll be buying the Beringer pedal soon.

Those of you using JS2 in live situations, please feel free to make feature requests.

Part change via MIDI key (as an alternative to PC) is on the list.

Well since you asked. Smile

I would like to use Jamstix live, I'm just still stuck on a host hump - I can't seem to find an affordable host that does what I want. Of the one's I find I feel would work, like Ableton Live, I'd be buying it for a small fraction of of what features I'd actually use. I'd rather spend the money on Jamstix's, and samples, etc.

Ramblings of what I'd like to see:
A "standalone" application to host Jamstix
(A pseudo minimal host like Toontrack Solo)

Load Jamstix specifically for using with liveloops. Ignore all the bar numbers and song position. There really won't be any.

The idea is that just a few taps on keys or pads during a song controls where it's going. A glorified drum machine that actually listens to what everyone is playing.

Accept midi input for controlling parameters, and transport.
Accept Midi for Jamming.
Accept audio for Jamming.
Later, maybe accept Midi input for sync, tempo, and transport.

Midi translate keys to send "pattern changes" i.e. I can hit key C1 and it queues up pattern 1, C#1 for pattern 2, etc.

Force "Now" to another pattern . For those times where drums should just stop, stop time for example. Or an Immediate jump to a pattern. Maybe this can be velocity sensitive. A light tap and the pattern changes at the end of the current pattern. A hard TAP means change now. Maybe three levels, soft tap - change at the end of pattern, Medium tap = change in 4 bars, Hard TAP = change now.

Tap tempo,
1. Tap a midi key 4x tempo starts, and midi starts.
2. Tap a midi key to adjust tempo after midi has started.
3. What would be cool - having a velocity sensitive tap. First hard tap says this is "1". Light taps establish tempo. A Really hard TAP says to start midi on the next beat, like maybe an fill intro. i.e. | TAP tap tap tap | Z "TAP"Fill Fill | 1 2 3 4 ....
4. Visible tempo and Beat number on screen.

Pattern queue up. Like an intro fill followed by groove. I tap the "intro" pattern key, then the first groove key - these are pushed onto a stack, and shifted out in order.

Fills for transitioning of styles - like from Latin to swing, usually drums do a intro fill in the new style.

Example of how this would be used.
Song example, "Green Dolphin Street", this song switches between Latin and swing feel every 8 bars. Intro - Latin style. Solos, some may want swing, some may want Latin. End usually vamps out in Latin, but if next song is swing you may want to keep the swing and transition.
Setup
Create a couple of Latin style patterns, one at 4 measures, one at 8. Repeats are infinite.
Create a couple of swing patterns one at 4 measures, one at 8.

Pre song setup:
Hit key to switch to Latin pattern. (not playing)
Tap and count off: | tap tap tap tap | Z Z TAP (Fills 1) |
Latin starts on beat 1. Instruments start vamping.
Melody starts.
Sometime before first ending - hit key to queue switch to swing. Transition fill is in swing style.
sometime in 1st ending hit switch to queue switch to Latin - transition fill is in Latin beat.
back and forth.
Solos start - keep it in swing.
Trumpet shouts "Give me some Latin", switch Now to Latin.
Sax says "Swing it" - switch to swing, but end in Latin.
Melody and endings again.

Here's hoping - but I may be in the minority.

All duly noted.

As far as the host goes: take a look at REAPER, which is uncrippled and has a non-commercial license for just $50.

The NINJAM folks recommended another very small VST but I forget what it is. I'll have to dig it up.

Maybe Tobybear MiniHost? http://www.tobybear.de/p_minihost.html
Or maybe SAVIHost? http://www.hermannseib.com/english/savihost.htm

Reaper is amazing. I've got my request in there for Midi remote on the tap tempo. I also mentioned a velocity thing to "Start". This seems so handy.
VSTi Tap! 1.2 doesn't work with Reaper.

I've tried both these. They don't have a midi tap tempo.

Now VSTHost does work Tap! 1.2 but ... its midi to jamstix just makes it play, you can't stop it without stopping the audio engine, which causes glitching.

Maybe somebody has a trick to really using one of these? I can't figure it out.

I've tried many hosts, that's the problem you have to try many to figure out a simple live scenario.

I guess I'll stick with Sonar. It has it's own baggage but I know it.
