Hi Ralph,
I don't want to blame JS2 but I have noticed that swapping between projects containing JS2 causes Cubase (Sl2.2) to lose it's MIDI connections to my FW-1082 control surface/soundcard. I'm going to experiment with some other pre-JS2 projects but I don't recall this happening before.
To reset the connection I have to close Cubase, power off/on the Tascam then re launch Cubase. Also, sometimes when this happens, on closing Cubase, it hangs and I have to kill it in Task manager.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Tim. _________________ Core 2 E6600, 2GB RAM, 2x320 SATA II HD

It really isn't possible for Jamstix 2 to cause this. It may trigger a bug in the associated device drivers but it certainly cannot cause the problem itself. Make sure you have the latest driver for the FW-1082 and I would also suggest to try REAPER to see if this is Cubase-related. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph,
Well, this is really wierd but I think I may have got somewhere.
I had actually lost all hope as the project I was working on was sinkinginto the quicksand. First, I had this problem with the lost MIDI connection, second, I started getting warnings from Cubase that the "Sample Rate has changed to 44.1KHz. I checked other projects and the problem seeemed to be propagating - panic!!! Checked the FW-1082's Control Panel and it seemed to be randomly changing from 44.1KHz to 96.0KHz, depending on the last project loaded. Backed everything up, uninstalled FW-1082 software and re-installed.
OK, started with some old projects and all OK. When I got to my latest projects, using JS2, I got the problem back again. After a week testing this I have found that the troublesome project has both JS2 and NI Kompakt in it (I'm just using a string patch). Everytim I load this project it kills the MIDI connection and, before I reinstalled the FW-1082 drivers, seemed to be triggering ramdom sample rate changes, eventually resulting in a complete lockup of the system.
I can't make a totally logical analysis of it all but two things are for sure:
1) When I load the project which causes the problems, JS2 and NI Kompakt seem to be trying to load their samples in parallel - I see JS2 loading, then it stops and Konpakt loads its samples, then I see some of the project, then JS2 loads more samples etc. - it all takes a long time. I've got a Dual- core system and I just wondered whether the two tasks were somehow in conflict?
2) I finally removed Kontakt from the project, saved it, rebooted the FW-1082, reloaded Cubase and the project and all is fine. I can now add Kompakt again and assign the MIDI track back to it and it seems to work OK - so far.
I've loaded 20+ old projects in the last week's testing and the common factor is having JS2 and Kompakt in the same project - they seem to fight for resorces during the project load phase which results in MIDI connectivitiy problems and sample rate setting problems. I've never had any such problems with my current (old) version of Cubase before. Maybe I should upgrade to Studio 4 but I'd like to be sure this is not going to make matters worse.
Probably, none of this is your problem and I should go to the NI forum but that's probably waste of time (LOL).
Any thoughts?
Cheers,

Go to the 'Options' screen in Jamstix 2 and move the 'Sound Load Priority' slider all the way right. See if this helps. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph,
Well, I think I've finally bottomed this out. The problem lies somewhere between Cubase SL 2.2 and the Tascam FW-1082. I loaded a project then, by way of experiment, created a new project as a separate "session". Switching between them causes the FW-1082 to lose its MIDI connections to Cubase - audio remains fine - but all the control surface linkage vanishes. Closing Cubase and powering-off/re-powering the FW-1082 woukld not sort the problem - I had to reboot the computer.
So, I suspect that Kompakt VST, which was part the project causing the original problems, has some "window related" problems. I.E. when it loads it, somehow, corrupts the connection between the FW-1082 and Cubase.
Next step is to upgrade Cubase to Studio 4 in the hope its a Cubase problem but it's made me postpose purchase of East-West Symphonic Orchestra as that's based around the Kompakt VST engine!!
Nothing JS2 related here, as you rightly pointed out, but a worry all the same.
Cheers,

I recommend you try the Kompakt/Tascam/JS2 situation in REAPER for comparison since it is uncrippled shareware and fully featured. This will allow you to identify if Cubase is part of the problem. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
