I'm working on a song where the main riff is played over 13 beats. I want to break up the first 6 bars as 4/4, 4/4, 5/4, 4/4, 4/4, 5/4 so the riff can be played twice.

I wrote three different JS2 bars: bar1, bar2, bar3 where the bar3 would be the one at 5/4. However, I wrote them all in 4/4. Then I added meter changes in Sonar 6 at the bars I wanted. I guess I was expecting sonar to modify the bar3 piece that I wrote in 4/4 to be played over 5/4 but instead, it gets messed up.

Do I need to write that bar3 in 5/4 to get it to play correctly? Obviously I'm going to try. I just thought I'd throw it out there in case I'm doing something else wrong.

Thanks.

Dave

Try using a 13/8 (4+4+5) at half the BPM (to account for 8 vs 4) to avoid time sig changes.

I'll try that Ralph, thanks.

For the sake of discussion though, when changing sigs and you're using custom written bars, should all the bars be written in the native sig? In other words, bars that play when the sig is 4/4 should be written in 4/4 and vice versa for 5/4?

Because it appears what I wrote in 4/4 doesn't play nice when the sig hits 5/4.

Thanks for the tip! Very Happy

For JS2 you must do the following to have correct time sig changes:

- enable 'Time Sig Changes' in the 'Options'
- each part in the song sheet must get the correct time sig (click bar or rep to set it)
- the host must do the time sig changes during part changes only. In other words, the time sig must be constant during each JS2 part.

The advances in working with 'odd' times are really appreciated, but... Rolling Eyes

Any prospect of being able to change time sig within a part in the future? (e.g. 2 bars of 4/4 then 1 of 5/4) as per cudbucket's original example).

I'm not wild about the half BPM solution as it makes it harder to to keep track of where you are in the sequencer view. And talking of which, any chance of a 'starting bar' count as an attribute of each part? Would help me enormously when building up a song structure...

Please tell the folks at Steinberg to include a proper bar and beat number in the VST interface specs and it won't be a problem. Currently the spec only requires hosts to send the quarter note position, which means nothing in a song of time changes unless you (the plugin) knows the history of all time sig changes that came before the current position, which cannot be done reliably given the freedom the host and user enjoy.

Ralph, thanks for the info regarding sig changes.

I tried using 13/8 as you suggested and when I do, the 13 in the bar-window is crossed out with a red slash, there is no sound after beat 7 and I get the following error message at the bottom of JS2:

ie update error(access violation at address 09423944 in module 'JAMSTIX2.DLL' read of address 0000747)

I get the same result when in 7/4 except that it is bar 7 that is crossed out with the red-slash.

Make sure 'Time Sig Changes' is disabled in the 'Options' screen and hit 'Reset Song' in the song menu.

The 'Time Sig Changes' option was disabled but I hadn't hit Reset Song. In any case, I went back to have changes from 4/4 to 5/4 to add up to 13 beats and it's working now with 'Time Sig Changes' selected and adjusting the song parts for the sig changes. In fact, I discovered that if you write a part in 4/4 and use it in a 5/4 bar, JS2 will improvise the remaining beat.

Nice stuff! I'm actually learning how to use this tool.

Thanks a ton Ralph.
