hi, Ralph. i'm seriously thinking about going Mac/Logic.
i've read in the past that you've stated that Mac compatibility is in the future but far off.
do you have any realistic guess when that might be? 6 months? 1 year? 2 years? never?
Jamstix is the only reason why i would not switch platforms but, alas, i really think i will do it anyway.
until there's is Jamxstix/Mac support, here's my next question:
i've heard Bootcamp is the answer for Jaxstix/Mac users. if i'm running Logic, do i need to still have a different Jamstix-compatible sequencer, like Cubase, to run in Jamstix on in Bootcamp? and then do i somehow import the Jamstix wave file in Logic; is that how it could work?
i really hope i don't leave Jamstix behind but i really think i'm leaving the PC world (and Cubase, at least as my primary sequencer) for good.
thanks in advance. |

I've been playing around with this tonight... I have Logic Expressrunning on my Mac and I've loaded Jamstix into Tracktion on my PC. I have midi connected the Mac and PC. I can route the Jamstix out through midi to Logic where I can play and record using Battery 3. Some sample mappings seem to be out of order but that should be easily fixed.
My only problem is that I'm not sure how (or even if I can) time synchronize the two hosts. I've looked at a couple of other mini hosts/chainers but I can't seem to get Jamstix to play in them let alone sync up to anything.
Bootcamp is one way of doing it but the problem with that is you can only run 1 OS at a time. Take a look at VMWare Fusion or Parallels with which you can run Windows while still in OSX. Neither has firewire support, but if you use USB midi you should be able to achieve the same thing I did above.
If I can find a way to sync midi between the PC and Mac I might try to get this going under a VMware session but I will need to purchase another midi interface to make this work.
One step at a time...
But native mac support is really what I'm looking for to...
Cheers....

darcy, thanks. i think you've thrown more at me than i can understand though, i think.
i'm not looking to run Logic and a PC-seqencer at once. worst-case scenario, i record a dummy track on the PC sequencer, use jamstix to get a cool beat, then import (forgive me if i'm using wrong terms) the Jaxstix file as a wave or aiff into Logic and then rerecord the guitar part(s) and all the rest.
does that make sense?
also, if i MUST use a PC/Jamstix-compatible sequencer...
a) what's the cheapest-possible sequencer i could use? just to track a "dummy" guitar track as i've said above.
b) will my Cubase 1.0 work with Jamstix 2? i asked this a while back and the answer was "not officially supported but maybe."
thanks a bunch, darcy and Ralph. |

The Mac version is far off, I'm afraid. No timeline or release date range.
There's a guy here by the alias of 'Funktional' who is using Jamstix on Mac via Parallels desktop. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I have got it working with vmware fusion as well, but the problem is synchronizing jamstix (or the host its running) to my host on the mac. if I can get them synced up on separate machines it should not be too difficult to do the same with fusion. _________________ darcyb62 |

thanks, darcy and ralph.
so, Darcy, you think Reaper is the cheapest, easiest sequencer host to run Jamstix in, if i go Mac/Logic and use Bootcamp?
i was wondering if my current SX 1.0 will support Jamstix 2 -- if it does i don't have to buy anything new.
perhaps i'll search or start a thread (i may have made one months ago about this) on whether anyone's had success with SX 1.0 and Jamstix 2.
and i'll look in to Reaper.
thanks a bunch. |

Reaper can be free if you want it to be. It's probably not the easiest to use. For easy look at Tracktion but that's not free though it can be cheap. I have absolutely no idea if jamstix will run with your version of cubase. Why not just give it a try. _________________ darcyb62 |

Depending on your needs, MiniHost or SAVIHost may suffice. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

"Depending on your needs, MiniHost or SAVIHost may suffice."
Ralph, since Logic would be my main sequencer, i would have a really simple need of a PC/Jamstix-compatible sequencer:
record a single guitar track for Jamstix 2 to use as an input to "jam" with and create the beat i want.
from there, i would take Jamstix 2 beat i just created to Logic.
that's all i would need of a sequencer: basic tracking of a single guitar. nothing more. no effects, nothing.
i'll look into MiniHost or SAVIhost. i assume a google search will yield something.
thanks. i'm hopefull that i can go Mac/Logic and not give up Jamstix.
p.s. darcy, you said why not just try Jamstix with my Cubase -- i haven't bought Jamstix 2 yet as i was waiting for a new DAW. it does work with Jamstix 1. if i can get a free sequencer to work with Jaxstix 2, i would sell my Cubase to help pay for all my new gear (yes, i know i won't get much but every dollar helps.) |

Hi Ralph thank you for the update that solved midi out problem.I wonder if the minihost can be slave to the midiclock.Do you know any simple host that can receive and doesn`t tax the proccessor a lot.?as you know I just try to mac the jamstix fully.

MiniHost has a 'sync to midi clock' function. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I couldn't get miniHost to do what I wanted but I was able to get this going with Tracktion. It's really slick... I'll just have to spend som,e time getting the mapping set up.
Looks liek I'll be making that Jamstix 2 purchase after all. _________________ darcyb62 |

Hi Ralph,
I have downloaded the minihost but the jamstix2 runs independently so how I can sync it to midi clock?

Is your main host sending midi clock? _________________ darcyb62 |
