I have finally gotten to spend enough time with JS2 to get a feel for what it does. I like it- though I haven't actually created a song with it. I did get to completely go through the manual, while exploring JS2 which brought me to a point where I have a great appreciation for what has been developed. Great work Ralph - and you are already listening to and responding to your customers as usual. So this is my first response to JS2 - and also a bunch of questions.

First of all, I know a concern was already expressed concerning having to program sounds by limb. My first thoughts were this: for a program that was already intelligently taking care of the whole limb issue for us in the previous version, this was a step backward - now we had to figure it out for ourselves. I want to be able to tell the drummer what I want to hear - NOT how to play it.

Questions:

1.Jamstix Classic style was quickly presented to address this concern. My question now is - does JS2 still work the same way to play with the patttern - or only if there is a drummer loaded.

2. In JS1, we had the option of having semi hats for fills - I don't see any way to choose this now - or am I missing it?

3. Degree of openness for Hats -
A. I have no difference - I get the same sound no matter how hi I open them. (I have only a closed Hi Hat sound)
B. The process of setting the degree of openness in the cell editor is too indefinate. It looks like there are a max. of 5 different degrees of openness, but it is difficult to choose one of the purposefully, because there are no steps to choose on the setting. Better to have 5 steps rather than and indfinatly variable adjustment - even the info line at the bottom doesn't tell me which degree my setting is on.

Out of time - I'll post a few more questions later.

Thanks,
Geoff

Not sure I understand the question. 'Jamstix Classic' will work without a drummer if need be.

It's not there at the moment but may be added later. Using CC4 (as explained below) gives you more fine control.

The reason the openness is smooth over its range is that it supports drum modules that have more than 5 degress of openess. It uses the CC4 controller to achieve. It actually becomes a bit complex as some modules will use CC4 and others need discreet MIDI notes. Making the hihat control behave the same at all times is rather advantageous INMO.

Concerning your troubles with it: what exactly are your steps? Also, if you are using the internal sounds, try using a CC4 envelope in the host to control hihat openness throughout the song, if it is more than just a single open hat.

Sory, my question wasn't well worded. There are various references to the way JS2 customises or randomizes a pattern - creating the part on the fly. The manual (6.1)refers to hand editing patterns and having Jamstix "do the chores around it". In 11.3.1 we read.....place your own kick notes via the bar editor but "have the brain take care of the other sounds". The question is, does this style compose or randomize your pattern at all, or just play what you enter?

When I select the Hi Hat in the cell editor, and adjust the openness, I still only get a closed sound - even when it is all the way open.
What is / how do I access and use a CC4 envelope?

Jamstix Classic generates notes based on the selections of the kick, snare and hihat controls. These include probabilities if the corresponding sliders are set that way.

The resulting notes are still processed by the drummer model (if one is selected), which may alter notes, add timing and velocity variations and add accents.

Is there a way (when you are not using reduction) to "always play side stick"? How about swithcing to ride without necessarily being in "Power mode"? I'm sure there must be a way without having to manually chage each cell in the bar editor to the new sound. JS1 had simple checkboxes.

How do I place a fill somewhere other that at a repeat or a transition. If I right click I have the option to load a fill, but I don't necessarily want to load a specific fill, I just want jamstix to play a fill there (designate that bar for a fill to be played)

Thanks,
Geoff

This is done via the drummer model which adds a 'Auto Snare' element. Move its 'Max Power' slider all the way right and the sidestick will always be active.

This is done via the drummer model which adds a 'Power Hand' element. Move its 'Min Power' slider all the way left and the ride is always active.

Go to the bar, click FILL in the brain and then the COMP button.

OK, I've narrowed down the problem a little. First of all I have noticed that selecting rimshot in the cell editor also produce no change in sound ( I get the basic snare sound). Also, JS2 plays open highhats when the style / drummer puts them in, I just can't manually insert them.

A significant discovery, is that the problem is only on my laptop. I updated my desktop last night to 2.18 ( as I had already done with my laptop) and the sounds worked fine on my desktop. So then, I reloaded the JS2 stock kit on my laptop, figuring there were missing sounds - no change.

You need to move the hihat openness symbol ion the cell editor to the desired openness. Have you done that?

Concerning the snare rimshot: go to the kit editor and make sure a rimshot sound is assigned and audit it to make sure it sounds.

Yes I had benn adjusting the openness symbol. Also the rimshot sound was assiged. However, i noticed that nothing was assigned to Snare Right, and when I assigned the appropriate snare, I got my rimshot.

I had also found since my last post that sidestick also wasnt working. The sound was assigned in the kit editor, but when I sellected it and clicked on "Load" it started to play.

Same with my High hats. I reloaded all the sounds (even though they apeared to be assigned) and now they work fine.

Hopefully this process will help if anyone ever runs across the same situation.

Thanks,
Geoff
