GAH, i'm probably a moron and its right under my nose. |
Well... it IS right under your nose...
'Import' is a style! (This can indeed be a bit confusing... I also tried to load the midifile somewhere else before I discovered this! Everyone is a moron every now and then... ) So in the Song sheet click on the Style and select the Import style. When you've done so THEN you can select the groove or midifile at the TOP of the Brain section! Be sure to set what kind of file you are gooing to import (MIDI, JS1, JS2).
I have to say that although this information IS available in the manual (page 36), it is not TOO helpfull... (as it doesn't say where the file should be loaded, which is in the Brain). But it IS quite hard to write a manual about something you know all ins and outs off: you tend to oversee things newcomer might need to know. But... that's why we've got this awesome forum!!! Still, reading the manual is very important to get the most out of JS2. That's true for a lot of programs, but in case of JS2 it's mandatory (if that is the right word...). |

It is also the subject of a demonstration video. Despite having watched this video twice before ever getting my hands on JS2, I failed to catch the importance of loading "Import" as the style. I would load up a style like 8th note rock and wonder why it was commandeering my groove.
So, again, my thanks to Ralph and J van E for help with my confusion! _________________ Rock softly and carry a big stick. Wait, what am I saying? Don't Rock softly. - Rock Churchill |

Ok, Thankyou. I did all that, and I finally got to the point where I have my saved bar loaded. and the style is set to Import. But when I hit play in the host, it only plays my saved bar, and nothing else. it just continues on playing blank bars resulting in no sound.....
EDIT: I got it working now. THANKS |

Having read the manual through half a dozen times I also managed to miss this, so a big thank you to J van E for bringing this method of composing to my attention. It works brilliantly!

I just finished my first official drum part with J2 and I'm thrilled. Thanks again Ralph and J van E for your expert advice! _________________ Rock softly and carry a big stick. Wait, what am I saying? Don't Rock softly. - Rock Churchill |

Same here! I've finally got the hang of how this thing works. For a few days I was worried about whether or not I'd ever get a grasp on how J2 works. Now that I know what I'm doing, it's great. The trick is to not give up before investing a little time to get past the initial learning curve. The posts here (especially this thread) have been very helpful.
Here's my first tune using J2: Keahiakahoe
I kept things fairly simple for this first tune, but made good use of accents and fills, and about nine "parts" total.
