Hi-
How can I have Jamstix2 use my Motif (external synth) drum sounds in SONAR while in "Jam with MIDI mode", or can I?
I have the JS2 Empty Kit loaded, MIDI Only lit in the Mixer. It must be a routing issue, but I've tried everything I can think of except the right thing, apparently !
I can play the Motif drums if I make the JS2 track the active MIDI track, so I guess I'm close.
TIA-
-Susan
EDIT: BTW, the manual says "the MIDI OUT LED lights up when
Jamstix sends data to its MIDI output." This doesn't light while I'm previewing the current bar in a loop, for example -- I don't see any indication of MIDI output, although I did enable that option when I loaded JS2 in SONAR. |

I don't have Motif, but this is how I would attempt to set it up if I did:
When inserting the Jamstix2 soft synth in SPE 6.2.1 be sure to check the "Enable MIDI Output" box. I'd only have two boxes checked, the "First Synth Audio Output" and the "Enable MIDI Output".
Then insert a new MIDI track. Set the Input on the new MIDI track to Jamstix2 - MIDI Omni. Set the output on the new MIDI track to your external Motif synth.
Be sure that the "Enable MIDI Output" option is turned on in Jamstix2.
That should do it. Let me know if this works for you. |

Hi tyde-
I followed your recipe, and still couldn't get a sound out of JS2 in "Jam with MIDI" mode, even with its internal kits. I'm sure this is just a routing problem on my end, but it's very frustrating, since I can tell from the manual it's a brilliant program, with endless possibilities, but I just can't get it to work here...
Thanks so much for your help-

No sound even using JS2 internal kits? Problem.
Before trying an exteral synth, you should try to get it working with JS2 kits first.
What kit, style, drummer are you using? Did you start from Quick Start? If not, try starting out with QuickStart. Then try to get a sound using Jam-No Input instead of Jam-MIDI Input, turn up your power nob to about 100% too. |

Add a MIDI track with input=Jamstix2 and output=Port to Motif and check 'Input Echo' (or Monitoring) on the track. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph, et. al.-
I either get no MIDI input indicator in JS, or MIDI input but no "Power Dial" response, or the drums sound when I play through a keyboard track, or...
Anything but what I want, which is to try out "Jam with MIDI" with my Motif drum kits, acc. to 14.2 Jamming With MIDI in the manual:
5) Add Jamstix to your project as a VSTi instrument.
6) Make sure you have a MIDI track with output=Jamstix.
7) Set the input of that track to the desired MIDI data source
Enable ‘Input Echo’ or ‘Input Monitoring’ of the MIDI track
9) Set Jamstix to ‘Jam With MIDI’
You should now see the yellow ‘MIDI’ LED in the song sheet light up as you play your MIDI
instrument. As your host plays and Jamstix drums, you will see the power knob turn in
response to the averaged volume of your MIDI instrument.
I've re-routed myself into a tizzy here. There was one shining moment when I thought I had it figured out, but that quickly passed.
Is anyone out there using JS2 with an external (hardware) synth? The instructions were "Add a MIDI track with input=Jamstix2 and output=Port to Motif and check 'Input Echo' (or Monitoring) on the track.", which of course I've done 5 gazillion times now (exactly -- I counted).
Thanks-

Hi Susan G
You need Midi track with Jamstix input
Motif output with midi channel 10
That works on my Korg N1, but the mapping needs ammending.
Sorry if you have already tried channel 10, but I dont see it mentioned

Do you want to jam with the MIDI from your Motif keyboard while at the same time sending MIDI output data from JS2 to the Motif? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Yes, exactly! I had it working at one point...
Thanks!

You need to have a MIDI track with input=Motif output=Jamstix2 and Input Echo on. This will feed the Motif data to Jamstix. You also need a second track with input=jamstix2 and output=Motif and you may have to set the MIDI channels in the kit editor to 10 since Yamaha keyboards usually require that channel for drums. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
