JS2 never ceases to amaze me !
Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool

Was in an adventurous mood today, tried to check out the limits Twisted Evil by doing everything in an uncommon way.
Bear with me, it might be worth it !

JS2, Midi out only, EzDrummer mapping.
EzDrummer loaded in Cubase externally (not subhosted).

-- composed a 14 bar sequence with EzDrummer grooves (JS not involved), based on Levon Half Time, fills in completely unconventional locations

-- exported that as a Midifile from C4 to Windows

-- switched on JS, Jam no input, loaded EzDrummer mapping, Drummer Phil, Import Style, imported that Midi, checked repetition fills

-- Result: Phil interpreting that Midi almost literally, let it run for approx 80 measures, perfect.

-- drag'n'drop to C4 - voila, 80 bars of that strange but cool "composition" with added flavour

-- repeated play through while playing with the controls, power, brain, even changed drummers - a rainbow of possibilities while still keeping the original groove idea completely intact

-- You could replace the EzDrummer part with JS2's own sounds or any other sound module, the EzDrummer Midis with your own Midis or a self-programmed part, doesn't matter. Same concept, same amazing results.

-- This is absolutely incredible for a control freak like me, Ralph, what galaxy did your space ship come from ? Shocked

-- Now the only thing that could even improve this way of working would be the ability to import a sequence via drag'n'drop from C4 into JS, thus eliminating the need to export as a mid to Windows. Maybe for Christmas ? Wink

Had to share this with you, maybe somebody can use these concepts which are not immediately obvious (at least not for me).

Very happy,
Rhino

Wow, that's cool. One could do the same with MIDI files generated by Band-in-a-Box or musiclab slicy drummer.

Well, it opens a new range of possibilities for me.

Great, that's what I intended.
And you really have to check it out yourself to see how musical it works.

Sounds exactly like the way I want to work with JS2, importing a drumpattern from another application and then have JS2 making it come to live.

However, I cannot import midi. JS2 refuses to read my Groove Monkee files (at least the rock ones, not country) and also some simpler older stuff I have tried. Any of you had better luck with this?

I use JS2 from inside Cubase 4. But I get the same lack of results on my laptop with SX3.

tombuur,
I'll check that out till tomorrow.
However I only own the Groove Monkee Country full set plus various demos.
What format did you try, GM, EzDrummer,..., ?
I vaguely remember them fixing something because they didn't load in EzDrummer, not sure though.
One of the great findings leading me to post is the fact that JS2 can load a longer Midifile as style, keeping it intact.
So I would probably still use Cubase to assemble a verse or a chorus and import that en bloc in JS2, might even try a complete existing song over the weekend if I find the time.
For 1 or 2 bar patterns I'd rather just use JS itself, the Groove Monkees are not that special that I couldn't do a bar or two of that stuff myself.
But I'll check.
Cheers,
Rhino

I used Groove Monkee GM single track.

Import did work with Country midi, but not Rock. Then again, some of that happened after I had managed to load a 1 bar 1 track midi file I wrote myself for testing. After loading it, I could also load some of the other stuff, but with very weird results. So I don't know what to think.

I too am wondering now whether Groove Monkey will be of any value in the future. I have read the manual again today, now actually having tried JS2 so that I have something to relate the information to. And it looks like JS2 can do a lot of things, so you don't need any libraries. On the other hand JS2 can also easily audition (if midi import works), so you could quickly scan e.g. Groove Monkey and find something that appeals to you for further development in Jamstix.

We're gonna try to get all those MIDI import incompatibilities but it will likely take a few weeks...

Tombuur,
Groove Monkee works here at first glance.
Import style, preview, load
Rock single file GM demos as well as Country commercial EzDrummer mapping.
Could you try downloading a newer version of the demos and try again ?
Additionally, ask them for the EzDrummer mappings of your libraries, you'll get them for free and JS2 loads them just fine.
Tell me about your results.
Nice weekend,
Rhino

I got all Rock and Country that I bought, including the EZdrummer files that I didn't even unpack. Groove Monkee supplies a large range of formats, which includes special files for individual drumkits in DFHS depending on what kitparts are present.

So what I have are not the demos, but the real thing. Could make a difference? However, I also had trouble with "Dry Studio" midi files, and I think Ralph has found some problems too and are working on them. Will see tomorow, it's past midnight over here.

This is something I am going to try this weekend. Awesome idea. Thank you.
