Hi,
I didn't find anything via the search function, but will there be more than 4 channels in the JS2 mixer in the future? That would be great!!

I didn't know it was that hard to implement.. Sorry for being bold!
Jamstix 2 already is very good! But back in JS1 I also wondered why there is a mixer with only 4 channels, when most drum mixes would better fit in 8 channels. |

Well, I wonder why there is a mixer at all as you normally apply compression and EQ in your sequencer |

Yea, I think in general if you are using more than 2 outs, then you probably just need to send them all at 0db to your host and your host will handle those inputs on seperate tracks where you can EQ, compress, etc..
I think the JS mixer is more like a buss, than a mixer. It doesn't really provide a way to mix the levels of different sounds, compress, EQ, etc..individually per sound, and then output the final mix on a single stereo buss. That would be useful in some situations. All it really does is provide up to 17 busses, each of which can have its own compressor and EQ. Then in the kit setup you decide which output of the 17 to send each drum instrument of the kit to....and in THAT window is where you can really play with the mix of each sound if you want.
Perhaps the future JS3 will have more of a traditional mixer where you assign each of the sounds to a mixer channel and then control the pan, level, sends, compression, EQ, etc of each channel in that mixer, which gets mixed down to one stereo output or perhaps to more than 2 output busses. But that seems like a lot of complexity. I think most people either need to just get their instruments mapped to different outputs (and you have 17 stereo outputs available for that), and then do the actual processing and mixing in the host.... or some people don't have a host that can support more than stereo out, in which case they pretty much just use the first two faders of the JS "mixer" and the actual mixing of different instruments takes place in the kit setup. Please correct me if I'm wrong. |

Easy balancing the kit's volumes and easy kit recall would be the benefits I see.. And since there is a mixer at the first place, why do not enhance its usability? |

Of course each individual drum has its own volume/pan/ambience controls as well, so the mixer is already a second-level interface. (Right-click on a drum in the kit view)
There doesn't seem to be EQ and compression for each drum though. Whatever you need to EQ and/or compress using the built in stuff, just point those at the first 4 channels, and handle the rest with your DAW! |

| Somehow related question: you can choose an 8 channel output routing on the kit page, but er... that still leaves me with 4 outputs to choose from in Sonar...? I must be missing something here... |

You must increase the audio outputs to 8 or higher. Have a look at the mixer page. |

| Yes, I did that, but I'm still stuck with 4 possible outouts to choose from... |

Close your sequencer. When you start it again it should notice the set number of outputs. |

Aaaaaaaaaaaah, that's it indeed. So this is an overall setting and NOT song-dependent!!! After closing Sonar and loading JS2 again I now indeed got 8 outputs. Awesome. I made my own default song with everything setup the way I want it (including kit, style, drummer, specific mixing settings (hihats more to the left and toms a lot louder) AND that 8 output routing), so now I am ready to go with just a few simple clicks! Great! It's very nice being able to mix the drums in Sonar now (volume and various EQ and compression and so on), and even the Ambience has it's own channel! |
