Since this is my first post, let me begins by complimenting you and what looks to be a really fine, 'breakthrough' application... you clearly are bringing a whole new ball game to the audio realm... nice!
I have been wondering about something and have no idea if you could implement it or not... of if you would care to bother with it. Here goes:
Cubase SX [and it's relatives like Nuendo] allow more control of the timeline display than most other applications. By "timeline" I mean the part of a tracks window where the bars are shown.
Most sequencers ONLY set this bar count starting at zero and don't allow for 'minus' bars ... i.e., to the left of zero. Cubase does allow for this, it is set in the project config.... and for example one can make an offset for the project so that there are 2 or 4 bars of minus numbers to the left of the zero.
This has become a very standard way of setting up a project both for myself and other people I know. It lets you have do things [for example] like having a two bar intro before the zero... this is really great because then you can count bars and beats normally from zero onward and can think in [whatever you are using] 8 bars, or 12 or 16 ... you see?
Without this 'offset' feature, when working in a sequencer, one always has to 'do the math'... like, "umm, lets see... I want that fill at bar 16 but I have a two bar intro so, ummm... I have to really put it at 16+2 which is bar 18... etc. and the more complex the sections of a song, the more of this nonsense one has to deal with... right?
I think you can see how nice this 'offset' feature can be and how handy.
Now I'm wondering if Jamstix might be able to take it's bar counting from the host... so as to be able to display in the Jamstix arrangement window these 'minus' bars...
You can see how sweet that could be, no? We could have an intro that came before zero, and then be able to more easily arrange fills or pattern changes by counting normal pattern numbers [you know, multiples of 2's, 4's, 8's, etc.]
Now perhaps if Jamstix can't grab that info from the host, at least it could have it's own options to set up that arrangement bar display manually to match whatever one has set up in a host project???
I hope I have made this clear enough...
I realize that many hosts don't allow for or include this feature... but... maybe they will in the future... IT IS such a great feature!
thanks for listening. |

I've checked this out and unfortunately, Cubase does not report the count-in to VSTi. The problem is that the VST specification does not provide for reporting bar numbers at all, it only communicates beat counts. When Cubase is set for bar offset 2 it still reports beat #0 for the first beat of the -2 bar, which is the same it does for a bar offset 0. This means that Jamstix has no way of knowing that Cubase is using a bar offset.
We'll see if we can implement a simple way to let Jamstix know about bar offset. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Here's a link to a quick implementation of a bar offset for now:
http://66.235.201.50/demos/jamstixX2-8.zip
(I am assuming you are a demo user)
In order to use it you need to add the line:
BarOffset=2
to the [General] section of your jamstix.ini file. Change the number as desired.
Let me know if this works for you. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

thanks much I will give that a try for sure... so just to be clear, before I try it, is that it makes Jamstix wait for two bars [given a 2 bar offset] or does it actually change the bar numbering in the Jamstix arrangement window to show a -2 bars??? If it was possible to do THAT... I would think it would be neat. Forgive me, but I can only imagine things and really have no idea what they would mean in terms of coding changes... |

It doesn't wait. It does the same thing Cubase does, it changes the bar display in the arranger and transport area so at offset -2 the arranger starts at -1.
That way Cubase and Jamstix show and do the same thing. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ok that's a nice feature you added... and it's certainly workable as is by tweaking the ini file....
perhaps in the distant future it could become a setting inside Jamstix itself?
at least it does what I had in mind and between that offset and using a non real rhythm on the -2 bar [i.e., silience] and then with an intro on the -1 bar the desired effect and matching bar numbering works nicely.
I guess I gotta get out of demo land and pay up... will this feature be in the registered current version? |

Officially it won't be until we release 1.03 but there will be X releases available just like the one for the demo you used. When you order you get 1.02G and then you just put the latest X release on top.
We will make X2-10 available for demo users and customers later today and it will contain the baroffset function. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
