Hello All

Looking for some help here - Yesterday I was fortunate enought to get BFD. I'm a longtime user and fan of Jamstix but I am trying figure how to get this to work in this particular manner. I can get JS & BFD to work fine with BFD loaded within JS.

What I want to do is have JS feed BFD without having to load it in JS. My reasoning for this is that it seems to get the correct number of outs for BFD in Sonar 6.2 you have to run the plug as a DXI instead of a VSTI

Is this possible JS (midi out only ) > BFD.

My normal method up until now has been JS loaded up with Battery loaded up with the ns_kit7 (free) but obviously BFD is a different beast

Sorry if this is a dumb question - Just seems like I should be able to operate this way.

Appreciate any help

Load JS into Sonar and make sure you enable the 'MIDI Output' checkbox in the Sonar screen when doing this. You now have 'Jamstix' as an option for MIDI Input selection on all MIDI tracks so you just need to add a MIDI track with input=Jamstix and output=BFD to have JS drive BFD. Also, since BFD does not use GM layout, you may want to load a BFD mapping into JS with "MIDI Out Only" checked in the mapping tab to just get the proper key layout loaded.

Thats exactly what I thought and did - It would not work for me though

Maybe I should not be using the Midi track automaticly loaded for BFD?

I will try again - another thing I was wondering is if the fact that I am using BFD as a DXI instrument has anything to do with it

Thanks for the great as usual support - Looking forward to JS2!

Do you see Jamstix as an available MIDI input device in Sonar?

OK Ralph - Maybe I am being dumb here - Let me state my steps and then maybe you can get me sorted out here:

Goal: To use all of Jamstix' functionality with the sounds from BFD (Not loaded in Jamstix but as a DXI Instrument outside of Jamstix - in real time)

Steps:

Load JS in Sonar with Enable MIDI out checked (Loading only the midi track).

Load the BFD All mapping and click on Midi out only. Jamstix Midi out channel is 1 (I dont see an All Channel or Omni option there)

Load BFD ALL DXI with Midi Source track

BFD ALL Midi source track shows JS channels 1-16 as available Midi Inputs. Select JS Channel 1 (as this is what is stated as the JS Midi Out channel)

Result - No sound at all - Understandable because:

1) I loaded rythyms in for about a 32 bar section - selected a Midi event at the end of the bars so that it would be recognised by Sonar (normally) as a midi event or track.

The transport is JS does not respond at all - It's as if even though Sonar sees it as a midi event/track it is not reported back to JS so JS does not respond to the Host at all. This seems even more strange to me becuase by default I have the Jam behavior set in JS to add fills at every 16th bar - When I click through each bar JS inserts a fill as it normally would. But when I hit play - nothing

2). When i try to audition Keyword jams with it I get a message to "Start and then Stop the sequencer so that JS has some info" - When I do this nothing happens.

I hope this is not too long winded - Just wanted you to see what I was doing so that you could easily identify what mistakes I am making.

I wish I did not have to do this but sonars handling of VSTI is not the best as you already know so DXI seems toi be the way to work with this particular program. I would just as soon load it up in JS and be done with it - When I do that all is seemingly fine sound and operations wise but I am sure if I dig a little further I would probably find that the outputs were not implemented properly - Thank you Sonar Mad

I love Sonar but sometimes it really frustrates me Confused

Edit: Forgot to add - Sonar 6.21 and JS 1.81

That's the problem. If you do not let Sonar insert the audio tracks for Jamstix then it won't send song positioning data to JS. You must insert JS with the 'All Synth Outputs' option checked as well.

OK Ralph - That got me sorted - Thanks Mate as always!

Question for you - I am noticing some midi or timing drift that I am not normally accustomed to hearing? - Like notes getting stuck and some possible doubling of notes - don't really know how to describe it - a little sloppier than normal.

Is there some optimal settings I should use between these two program to keep things smooth and tight?

Looks like these two will be a great, great combination once I get it buttoned down Very Happy Smile Cool Cool

Let me add this as I work with setting up this template a little more

Ralph - You may know the answer to this - It's worth a try here anyway

I have a template now set up in Sonar reflecting what we have been sorting out above.

However I keep getting a error message in Sonar that states " Editor Failure:"Child windows cannot have menus" - Do you have any idea what this message means? It is reported as an error on the Jamstix .dll - The BFD one opens fine.

Probably not your issue but I thought maybe you might have encountered it before and colud shed some light??

That 'child menus' issue has come up in the past. Please send me your rzdlog.txt file from the Jamstix folder for review.

Also, MIDI drifting is not normal but I'm not sure what is causing it on some people's setup.
