Greetings to all you very smart people.
I do not understand all this midi, VST jargon. You guys really are speaking a different language. I am a guitar player who plays with a Roland GR-20 which adds synthesizer sounds to my guitar sounds.
This virtual drummer concept sounds fascinating but I am not sure if I am midi savy enough to make this work for me on a live gig. I own a lap top. Is this what I would need to take with me to live gigs? I am playing with a drum machine now but maybe this would sound better. What is a sequencer and can I get a cheap one that will work for me for playing live?

Sorry for my very basic level of understanding all this stuff. I am old...

If you use a laptop, you would probably have to have it sitting where you could reach it to load performances inside of a sequencer. If you wanted more remote control-ability, you could probably use a MIDI keyboard to send out MIDI start/stop/continue messages to a VSTi host on your laptop, which needs to also allow loading of performance setups from a program change message. Console or Forte would probably be your best bets for doing this. Then you would also have to route a send from your guitar to the audio input so Jamstix could respond to your playing. If you used a bass pedal keyboard, you could even change drum patterns dynamically with your foot while playing guitar.

There are also free VST hosts out there like Mini Host or Savi Host.
Add a cheap Midi USB port to your laptop and a small Midi Controller pedal (but maybe this vcan be covered by your GR 20 as well) and you have a fully functional setup. There´s a function called Live Loop in JS where you can tell JS which parts of an arrangement to play when it receives the proper midi messages.
This gives you much flexibility for live purposes.
