I've also tried this with the Jamstix MIDI Input set to Ultralite - Omni, but then my Motif Drums play with each note I play on the PIANO track.
Thanks-

Please start a new project and when you add Jamstix, check that the following settings are CHECKED in the 'Insert Soft Synth Options'/Create These Tracks' panel:
- MIDI Source
- All Synth Audio Outputs (Stereo)
Tell me if that fixes the problem. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I'll try that tonight.
Just for the record, what should the Jamstix MIDI input be set to in this situation?
Thanks-

It should be set to the device that receives the input from the keyboard just as you have.
I've tried to duplicate this here and when I insert Jamstix with 'track folder' only then the MIDI doesn't seem to make it to Jamstix for me either. When I insert it without track folder and full audio outputs then it works. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hmm... I'll definitely give that a try tonight. I'm pretty sure it's been going into a track folder each time by default.
Thanks-

P.S. So the Jamstix MIDI input channel should be set to 1 in my example above, not OMNI, correct? Or doesn't it matter? |

| Ok re the input channel. Doesn't it seem odd that all the audio outputs are required to be inserted even though I'm not using any of them? Maybe that's a SONAR thing...? |

It's a Sonar thing but JS only needs 4 stereo outs minimum. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I inserted Jamstix in a new project without the Synth Track Folder and All Synth Audio Outputs checked, and still no joy. The Jamstix MIDI LED doesn't light, and it just echoes through any note I play on the PIANO track through to the Motif drums.

EDIT: BTW, I lose the MIDI LED on Jamstix as soon as I change the Jamstix MIDI track's output to the Ultralite. |

It must be a MIDI feedback loop since input and output device (both Motif) are connected. It shouldn't effect JS in free jam mode but apparently it does. Let me see if I can find a solution...
Btw, do you have a MIDI function on the Motif that's called LOCAL/MIDI OUT or MIDI THRU? If so, try using it to keep MIDI data from the input of the Motif to make it to the output of the Motif (no MIDI THRU). _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Yes, the Motif has a LOCAL switch which I always leave on OFF.
BTW, I really appreciate you sticking with me on this!
Thanks-

I think it's clear this is a MIDI looping issue (MOTU in to MOTU out) but why that is exactly I don't know. I don't understand how the piano can play the Motif drums UNLESS you are in "Manual Jam' mode in Jamstix with 'Play Input' on. In 'Free Jam', the input MIDI is never sent to the output by Jamstix. THis makes me think that there is another underlying issue that has nothing to do with Jamstix but with the MIDI routing in Sonar.
You may have to use the internal sounds or EZDrummer sounds while jamming (with MIDI input) and then when that part is done, switch the MIDI input to the Jamstix track off (to anything but the MOTU) and send the output to the Motif if you prefer those drums. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

The MIDI routing works fine with everything else for me in SONAR, but I can try a USB MIDI driver when I get home tonight and see if that makes a difference.

Hi Ralph-
Success! I followed a recipe from a SONAR forum member (Dave Clark -- thanks again, Dave!), and after a few tweaks for my setup it's now working exactly as I'd hoped. I saved a SONAR project with just the minimum tracks & settings to get Jamstix Free Jam to work perfectly with my Motif drums. Here are the track settings for that project, in case something similar comes up again:
Thanks so much again!
