|
|
I have a straight 4/4 song with the exception of two places where I need two extra quarter notes. Having a tough time figuring out how to program this...I guess this means I need a bar of 2/4...or I guess I could do it with one bar of 6/4 - adding two beats to a bar of 4/4.
Any suggestions? |

Does your host support these changes?
If for example I program a change from 4/4 to 2/4 in bar No. 50 in Cubase, JS will play a 2/4 beat in bar No. 50.

That's what I was thinking. I'm an Ableton kinda-guy. I'm sure I can do it, just haven't figured it out yet. I am in Jamstix mode this week.
Is there a way to do it in JS?

Can't do it in JS because JS is always slaved to the host for tempo and time sig. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I´m sorry but Ableton Live doesn´t support time sig changes yet.
Still only 4/4 in Live 6. Bummer!
That´s one of the reasons it doesn´t really qualify as a complete DAW yet.
I´d like to use it exclusively, too.
A cheap alternative for you would be Reaper which easily delivers all kinds of time signature changes AFAIK. |

I just spoke to Ableton. No-go. Yowee. They said it was high on the wish-list for Ableton 7.
So, humor me for a second...if the gestapo had a gun to your head and you HAD to figure out a way, what would you do?

If it´s only one song: Use Reaper to record that 2/4 time sig change thingie.
You can download it and give it a good period of evaluation time (fully functional shareware).
Maybe you´re gonna license it later (like I did, too). Maybe you just wait for Live 7 (like i do, too! ) |

Months ago we discussed the same issue: you told me about the idea of developing an option in JS2 for overriding the host time sig. I don't think this is a real must...but it would be REALLY appreciated by many Live users
BTW, there are dozens of Live users complaining about the lack time sig. changes in Ableton's forum. |

The override is not really possible because it means loads of extra logic since the hosts quarter position reset would be different that what the time sig demands and host bar and JS bar would never match. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

What if I exported to a midi file, added two bars in my host midi editor and had Jamstix play the completed midi file.
Is that the do-or-die?

Yes, that's probably the easiest way. Just set Jamstix to 'Manual Jam' with 'Play Input' and 'Mute Brain' checked when you feed back the edited MIDI. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Okay, so I have pretty much weighed my options.
To add two bars to my song I have to:
A: Buy a new host with a new learning curve and figure out how the thing works, configure it and get Jamstix working in it.
B: Keep Ableton; export Jamstix as a midi file and edit it in Ableton's midi editor which I am sure would be a piece of cake for people who are into midi and the like. Personally, I have been trying for years (yes, years) to understand how the midi editor works in Ableton and for the life of me I can't really Grok it.
Yes, I know that if I buy the video tutorial, crack the manual, then I will eventuallty get it.
That's ten hours.
It's gonna take me ten hours to add the two beats to my f'ing song. |

| PM me and I will do it for you...just let me know where you want the extra beats to be placed. Although I would suggest learning how to edit midi in Live, but if you don't have the time or patience...I will give you my email addy and you can send me the file...let me know where to send it to when Im done and all should be good. |

Thanks, Blindeddie, for the generous offer. I may take you up on it in the next few days.
Trouble is, the drum track is a work in progress and I am not sure where everything belongs yet. Also, even if I did I would probably need to make some edits later. Think I'm just gonna have to learn to do it myself. I appreciate it, though.
Are you good at Ableton? Is it just me or is their midi editor really diffcult?

Ableton Live´s midi editor IS a bit difficult, which means counter- intuitive and not well laid - out as in Cubase.
Second thing is: Midi recording in Live is still buggy. I was never able to record Jamstix´ midi out in Live properly. For instance Bass Drums are always missing and not recorded. There are workarounds for this (using a kind of midi router and "internal/virtual" midi cable, but it´s quite cumbersome.
So again I recommend that you deal with Reaper for this. They have a free, fully functional demo and the basics here are not that hard to comprehend because routing- wise there are similarities to Live 6. |
