I have a reggae tune that I wrote and used keyword jam with the reggae patterns to try to get it to be the dreadlock wearing drummer I always wish I had on call.

I had pretty straight guitar and piano stuff feeding on audio on the 2 and 4 beats, and complexity and funkiness turned nearly off, but I just couldn't get jamstix to behave.

Here's a link to the song - any clues? I want to re-record this song and really need better reggae drumming to call it finished.

The 3rd Way - Scott Lake

What tempo is your project in?

Ralph,

I don't have the project on this computer, but the tempo is around 72-75 BPM, if I'm counting right.

Seems like I remember 80 BPM, but when I use a stopwatch to check the timing, it's about 72 BPM.

I think the main problem is the BPM. I've listened to your song and it is double the speed you stated, so if your project is at 72BPM then it really should be at 144BPM. The incorrect tempo makes it pretty much impossible to get the right feel out of Jamstix for your song.

If I were you I'd try to get the project to 144BPM. If that is impossible, you can use a tempo multiplier. Look here for details on this feature:

I will give that a shot. I plan to re-record the song anyways, so it's not a big deal.

Thanks for your attention. -Scott

If you still have trouble with the right Jamstix feel at 144BPM, drop me a note and I'll be happy to help you nudge JS into submission.

ralph, so what if your next project is 80bpm, will you have to remove the time multiplyer? or will jamstix play at normal time?

It's a global setting so it will affect all projects. The purpose is to give you a way to mixdown a project with an incorrect BPM successfully and then you can return JS to normal time mode.

Well,

That didn't work either. All I'm looking for is a simple laid-back reggae groove - Even with complexity, funkiness and Accentuation all slid all the way left, I'm still getting way too busy and off-time patterns that don't seem to lock in with the piano and guitar groove. With the tempo doubling, it just seemed to make it even more busy with 8th note rim shot repeats and the like. I can post and example if necessary.

Are there any other rhythms besides the group of 3 labelled 'reggae' that will work for reggae.

Unzip this file into your 'rhythms' folder:
http://www.rayzoon.com/stuff/thirdway.zip

Close/re-open your project and do this:

- clear arrangement
- switch to manual jam
- set 'Fill Frequency' in the jam tab to zero
- go to rhythm tab and load 'Third Way' rhythm

This will give you a simple laid-back groove with no accents and no fills.

Ralph,

Thank you very much. I went ahead and totally re-recorded the song before looking here, recording at nearly double the BPM before and I got JS to behave a little better - still a little busy.

Here's a post of tonights version:
Scott Lake - The Third Way

I'll have to see about dropping in the 'Third Way' rhythm you made for me into the arrangement.

Thanks again.

I've had pretty good success otherwise with Jamstix. Even fooled Michael Kingston over on the KVR forums with a jam I did with the Graf Zeppelin patterns.

Here's a link to that one:

Ralph,

Here is the song with only the Third Way and Marley Funk (I think that's the name of the rhythm).

Much better in my opinion, though the fills sound like the drummer is on speed rather than weed!

Thanks again for your help.
