Hello everybody,
Today is my 1st day here and I'd like to note how helpful everyone is with each other, and how intelligent about this product and computer stuff you guys are... wow.
I'm a true "rock" when it comes to computer music... yes I'm old, BUT (_|_) not too old to learn.
I'm into Adult Contemporary R&B...
I have some ballads where there are no "gruves" per se during early verses only random hits (Luther Vandross style) that come to gruves in the chorus, changes and in the later verses.
Can I create a drum part with just random hits and space in Jamstix, then use the fills and other presets later in the same song?
-----
No one mentions perc like Congas, bongos, tri-angles etc... are those type of patterns available too? If so, would I run a second Jamstix to play those patterns and one Jamstix for the drum part?
If there are no perc patterns, can they be made with JamStix? I thought of remapping sounds to perc stuff, but since perc plays between drums, I thought the drum patterns in Jamstix wouldn't work.
I'm looking forward to getting and using Jamstix... I already fired my drummer... lol. |

Welcome to the board.
A pattern is by definition a pattern, which means that specific hits of drum instruments get repeated frequently. (For instance the kick on 1&3 and the snare on 2&4 in a typical rock pattern).
Of course you can program what you call "random hits" and save them in a pattern, but later on they will be repeated. So they won´t be random anymore.
I recommend to try to draw some drum hits in the drum editor of your host (what host are you using?) randomly and let Jamstix do the more conventional work.
Another approach could be: Play with the probability sliders in Free Jam mode (funkiness, complexity, accentuation, cymbal hits, fill frequency etc... ) mute all the instruments that you don´t need and record the result. This way you will get some interesting results with random hits (but in sensible places of the groove) of non- muted instruments. |

Hi Doc,
Thanks for taking the time to read and offer your help. I used the wrong word that being "Random" (Sorry 'bout that) . You are 100% right about getting actual "Random" hits in the song.
I'll try clear up what I meant. I need verses that have nothing but empty air except for an occasional yet intentional shaker or tamb etc. Yes they repeat thus being a pattern, but not sounding like a traditional pattern per se. Then a fill into a full voiced "normal" gruve.
Does muting auto-shut off on a pattern change or can I set Jamstix to do that? If "no" to both then I would need to program a pattern.
I played around with the Demo last night and couldn't do what I wanted, but I also saw the power in Jamstix and considered that I have a profound lack of knowledge about JS, so I bought the Jamboree package (I haven't even downloaded it yet).
Lastly, is there perc (Conga, tri-angle etc) type rythms and factory sound sets in JS or available for it? Obviously, sounds like conga, tri-angle etc are available all over, but rythm patterns that use the JS's features are a different story. Last night I realized just how strong a rythm section by JS would be, if it has or can have both. Wow!
Thanks again,
Shkgrad |

I think we covered the percussion issue in your other thread. Let me know if we need to talk about that more.
Concerning the 'random' bars: you might need to program your own patterns for that. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
