I'm an FL Studio user (using version 7 which was just released last week, if it's relevant), and I'm considering purchasing Jamstix. I played around with it a little bit last night and was impressed with what I saw. The only thing I couldn't figure out was how to capture MIDI out from Jamstix and send it to an FL Studio pattern.
I'd want to do this in situations where most of the time, Jamstix would produce good results but occasionally, it would probably need to know more about the piece and musical style to be what I'd want. For example, a big band piece would be fine with a Jamstix drum part except in situations where the drums would have to mirror or play off the band very closely (common in "shout" sections in big band music), and I'd want to have Jamstix do whatever it felt was appropriate, get a MIDI pattern, and do a bit of editing. I realize that I could probably use Jamstix' rhythm editor to do all that I'd want it to do, but in a long enough pattern with enough rhythmic variety, 16 rhythms might not be enough. Another reason to do this is to save memory if I wanted to use Battery or another drum kit outside of Jamstix; there's no need to have Jamstix loaded once it's created a MIDI part if I'm using something else to generate the sound.
I managed to record something from Jamstix last night, but it was pretty late and I couldn't quite figure out what I did. If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know. |
