|
|
Right now, I am using JS with the brain muted in order to use it as basically a playback drum module.
I know that Jamstix routes midi input to match that of General Midi setup. But for some reason, when I play back some general midi tracks, the drum track plays back just fine on some but on others I get like a weird bouncy snare.
Does any one have a mapping that they can share which will work completely with the built in JS samples and be fully compatible with General Midi?
For now, I am using another module call SFZ which plays soundfonts, and I have found a sound font called SGM180 or something like that which sounds very decent for the drums, but not as good as Jamstix. I really wish I can get this working right because I have to remix these songs, and I am only having issues with the drum track.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. If I confused anyone, please let me know.
Warmest regards,
Musikman |

I too had problems with my previously recorded drum tracks. I use Sonar Home Studio and most of my kick drums had to be transposed up one from accoustic bass drum (no sound at all in Jamstix) to bass drum 1, according to the General MIDI slang.
The snare drum had to be transposed down two from electric snare (sounded like a double or triple hit snare in Jamstix) to acoustic snare.
Very easy to transpose but I still don't understand why things are set up this way. |

Thank you for the help friends. I really appreciate it. I will try out to understand how to remap things. I have not gone that deep. It does seem to be ok though.
I am right now, using soft synths within Ableton live to trigger my midi instruments. And thats how I trigger Jamstix. I have Jamstix in one of my midi tracks being triggered by the midi notes sent to it. I works like I said on some drum tracks of specific midi songs, but not on others. I really wish JS could be used as a GM soundmodule. I hope Ralph can help us with this. I think JS is really the very best drum module when one uses its brain to get inspired and write songs, but to have it as a playback module is really a plus specially if you already have premade midi files.
Ralph, could you help us out with this, Please?
Thanks in advance.
Warmest regards,

| The problem, as I understand it, is that even in GM format things are not always equally mapped. That´s why remapping to your needs is the only way. You only have to do it once, then save the mapping. |

As Doc and BlindEddie said, remapping for specific needs is fairly simple. If we need to address GM compatibility issues, we will do so in JS2. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

First of all take one of your Midi Drum files.
Have it played back by any GM player so you get an idea what´s going on in the file, what drum instruments are in there etc.
Open the file in a midi editor and look up what notes trigger the different instruments.
Then open a JS kit that you like soundwise and map the notes of the instruments according to what you found in the editor.
Save the kit under a new name (e.g. XY- GM- kit) and you´re done. |

Thanks Ralph,
I found out what is wrong. Its really nothing wrong with the mapping sort of speak, but really that every drumkit in JS doesnt have all the instruments specified for the GM format. So what happens, is that when my midi drum track calls for say a conga or timbal part, it will not play anything beacuse there is no sound specified in that key.
So that is why my Soundfont works because every instrument in the GM for drums is set at every key. Maybe in JS2 I hope this is possible so we can use the awsome samples in JS in full GM format whether we want to use the internal brain or just mute it.
Cheers,

Thanks DOC,
I responded to Ralph before reading your post. I suppose this would be a great way to do it. But are all the samples to compose a full GM drumkit there? If so, could someone please put together a mapping for GM, or kindly show how to do it? I will try it this weekend and if it works, I will post it here so we can all have access to it. Thanks Doc for the idea. _________________ Musikman

The GM format specifies a combination of drums and percussion. Jamstix only has drum sounds, therefore percussive sounds that are not present , such as timbale or congas, cannot be mapped and triggered.
We are planning to release a hand percussion add-on for Jamstix 2 this year that will allow you to have a more complete GM layout. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
