Greetings. First time poster here at the Jamstix forum. Love the product. Here's the question:

I've got a tune that is essentially complete. Although it was recorded against a timeline, it is not quantified and the drums were played MIDI-live by my fingers on the keyboard and not quantized.

Here's the question: I don't want to give up control of the drums -- I like the way it came out seeing that it's fairly synchopated, but I'm curious to see how Jamstix would approach the tune. So, I loaded Audio8 against the bass track (maybe I should try the master?) and let it go. It seems like it's trying to follow the timeline of the tune instead of the audio. I've made sure that the jam state was following audio instead of midi, but I can't seem to even get the time lined up. It's not a latency issue, because it works on other songs which I've strictly lined the beats up against the timeline (audio or midi).

Whatchall think?

Hi, Bill?,

It would help to know what DAW host software you're working in.

Also, keep in mind, JS will always follow the tempo track/timeline specified in your host. So, if your audio tracks don't sync to that tempo track, you would have to manually adjust the tempo track to fit with the audio tracks. (Hope that makes sense.) I recently pulled this off in Cubase SX3. It took a bit of work but was well worth it to get that JS drummer to groove with it!

All I had to do was record a midi note at the beginning of each measure (while the audio played back) and Cubase gave me the option to convert that to a tempo track. It really worked a trick! JS follows those tempo variations perfectly, now.

Kenny:

first, thank you for your quick response. I use N-track as the DAW, for what it's worth. Very good DAW, if I do say so.

So, in line with your reponse, I wonder if I've done something irrecoverable. N-track corrupted the .sng file at one point (the extension that holds all the wave files together, along with tempo, volume evolutions and effects, etc.) and so I had to import all the wave files manually. As you mentioned in your post, the tempo, which was originally 108.22 is now at 120. If I change the tempo, Jamstix plays at the correct tempo, HOWEVER, not in time. I'm sure that in pulling all the wave files into N-track manually, I've managed to move the start of the tune out of synch with the timeline.

I'll investigate and see if I can adjust N's tempo track. That's a good insight.

So, the next step is how to make Jamstix follow the evolution of the tune -- softer at first, and more busy at the end.

If you're interested, you can listen to the tune here: Are you Washed?

Bill,

Now that IS interesting! It was an N-Track demo tune that I was working with, to start. (You've probably heard it already.) I couldn't figure out how to manipulate the tempo track in N-Track, though. So, I ended up importing the .wav files into Cubase and worked on it from there.

You can take a listen here:

I like your production of that old favorite hymn and I think JS could spice it up even more. Don't worry, you can automate lots of paramaters in JS, like velocity, complexity, etc. or experiment on-the-fly.

I hope N-Track doesn't have you painted into a corner.
