Hi,

it's all in the title. Sometimes, Rythm 0 is "empty" and then it's really annoying. If I have it jamming in the keyword mode and then in the free mode, I get for example Funk S1R4 every other bar if I was using the keyword funk set 1.

any idea?

thanks

Philippe

Yes, Jamstix does that in audio jam mode (but not in MIDI jam mode). After the jam, you can quickly change the assignments in the arranger to fit your needs.

In Jamstix 2 this will be much improved due to the part-based arranger.

So that means right now you can't have jamstix fully improvise with audio(at least every other bar)?

The rhythm pattern in Jamstix is not affected by the audio or MIDI input, only by the settings of the jam tab etc.

In audio jam, Jamstix only uses averaged volume data from the audio stream. This is used for switch rules, rhythm reduction and velocity control.

In MIDI jam, Jamstix does the above but is also able to do rhythmic and harmonic analysis, yielding instant reactions as defined in the jam habits and is also able to associate chord patterns of the MIDI input with Jamstix rhythm slots, yielding better instant arrangements.

A full harmonic and rhythmic real-time analysis of audio data as needed for the above within the time and CPU allotment of a plugin in a DAW is not possible at this time.

Last night I had Jamstix doing a free jam with Mr. Ray73 playing a three chord progression. I guess the first time around I had the "fill" slider set to "2." The UI there is a little confusing because the other sliders increase the complexity the farther you go to the right, whereas this one I think sets how many bars go by before another fill, so moving it to the left increases the number of fills and moving to the right decreases the number. Anyway, I had lots of fills. I cleared the arrangement and moved the slider to 4, but then I had no fills at all. I kept clearing the arrangement and moving the slider, but no fills. It was also creating a very simple arrangement, alternating two rhythms until it got to the third chord, where it put another rhythm for two bars. Finally, I clicked on "reset jam" a couple of times, and it threw in three fills. So I went from an overly complex arrangment to a bare bones one, and then finally something a little more complex. But the problem is, I feel like the jam tab and the rhythm tabs are the way to communicate with the brain, but I am not sure the brain is getting the message. The brain is not following my suggestions.

The other thing I experienced is that when I try to scroll the arrangment back and forth to look at what got programmed, it keeps bouncing back to where it was. Perhaps the brain is fighting back.

This is all in Reaper. The problems, if they are not with my misunderstanding of the UI and the way Jamstix works, might be with the way Jamstix interacts with Reaper, especially the arrangement scrolling behavior.

Don't get me wrong. I really like Jamstix. It's just a little disobedient.

Thanks,

John

The arrangement behavior is normal as JS is locked to the host song position. Click the stop button (square icon) in the JS transport section at the bottom to decouple JS from the host so you can scroll the arrangement as desired.

The fill behavior you described is odd. If you continue to have such problems, let me know and we'll investigate this further.
