I've set Reaper to use ASIO4ALL driver, and that cut the latency down tremendously, but i'm still having a problem when I play the track back. When I record, I'm jamming with jamstix and everything sounds fine, my timing is going right along with the beat. But when I play the track back, my playing is all offbeat. WHy is that? Do I need to change a setting on jamstix when i play it back? I dont know whats happening.

With a manual jam, is the normal way of working with Jamstix to click in (or record midi with a controller) the basic drum part, and then use the arranger to program in the intros, drops, and fills? So the basic structure comes from the midi track, and then you give the brain some creative hints?

I am trying to figure out the balance between control and virtual creativity. Or do you use the rthym tab to control the basic rhythm, and then choose the other things?

The only thing I've used so far was FreeJam. I set it to jam with audio, hit record, and play. Then when I'm done, I play back the track, open the jamstix screen and mess around with the sliders to see what i can come up with. Thats about the extent of my know-how with Jamstix. I have LOTS to learn.

Do you create the drum arrangment first, and then record the other tracks? Or do you record some parts with a click or a simple drum groove and then bring in Jamstix?

In FL Studio I usually click in a simple drum pattern, start recording parts, and then I expand and tweak the drum parts as needed. I can do the same in Reaper. I didn't have much time to spend in Jamstix last night, but I started right clicking on measures in the arranger, and it seems to me the choices were "intro" and "fill." I didn't see any way to choose a basic drum measure. Do you do that in the rhythm tab?

I really wish I had more time to fool with this. Work and family keep getting in the way of the music hobby. Ah well, work and family are good too.

Sometimes I'll record the guitar to a click track and then add Jamstix later.
Sometimes I'll record guitar,bass and vocals (or piano and vocals) and then decide to add drums later.

Other times I will put the arrangemetn together in Jamstix before recording anything and then record the guitars etc. whilst playing along to Jamstix.

It works either way. although I think sometimes it sounds better if you record the guitars etc with Jamstix rather than a click as you can get more into the groove.

Yes, if you want to modify the rhythm pattern you do that in the Rhythm tab.

Sometimes I'll save it as a new custom rhythm, but other times if I'm just adding a cybal or snare hit for one bar I'll make the change, get Jamstix to play it with the change, lock the bar and then undo what I did in the rhythm tab and the locked bar will still play the cymbal hit or whatever.

There are many different ways of working with Jamstix and I'm sure other people do it differently. This is the way that just works best for me.

When I right click a pattern in the arranger and hit click on the note icon to preview the pattern, I get a Reaper error message that says "List index out of bounds [-1]" The preview works, however, and there don't seem to be any other problems.

I'll post this in the Reaper forum too.

It's a harmless bug but there is a work-around. Make sure that the list of fills is populated and that one is selected before you highlight the note icon.

My question is, how can I modify jamstix further, while keeping the pre-recorded drum tracks off to the side?

I have a project that I had already recorded jamstix on. snare on one track, kick on another, etc, etc....

But now, I want to go back and play with the drumming. Maybe a different rhythm here, and different fill there.....

So, I'm trying but i'm running into problems. First off, I was changing the rhythm in jamstix, and hitting play in reaper, only to hear the same rhythm I had before.....then i realized, duh, i'm hearing the jamstix tracks I recorded earlier. Ok, so then I try to mute those drum tracks and hit play again, but now, no drums will play....

and now i'm frustrated...

so again, how can I modify jamstix further, while keeping the pre-recorded drum tracks off to the side?

Two ways:

a) Switch JS to 'Manual Jam'. Now you can change fills, change rhythms etc. right in Jamstix

b) Record JS MIDI output in your host (or do a export/import MID file) and edit the MIDI data in your host as needed. When done, set JS to 'Manual Jam' with 'Mute Brain' checked and feed MIDI Data into it for playback.

Im having a problem, I want to use the Jamstix demo in reaper but when I go to put the program on a track, it doesnt read on reaper. I downloaded the program and installed it but it wont show up when I click the fx button on the track. There is no jamstix under the VSTi listing. any ideas?

Did you double-check that the Jamstix demo path is within the VST search path of the REAPER preferences?
