So I've finally come up with some time (and motivation) to start finishing my basement. I want to build a music room with some decent sound isolation from the rest of the house. I have found a few web sites with respect but I'm wondering if anybody here has actually gone through such a project and could provide me with some words of wisdom.

Thanks...

Is it sound isolation (ie. soundproofing) you are trying to achieve, or more sound absorption (ie. acoustic accuracy) within the room?

Two different projects altogether.

I was going for the accurate room with hopes of spin-off soundproofing, but alas - this was not to be. The improvement made to the sound conditions inside my room has been far far better than i had hoped. The soundproofing to the rest of the house has been far less than my wife, children and neighbours had hoped Wink .

I did come across a lot of good info for "soundproofing" in my research but it was not of use to me as all the construction and finishing of the walls was complete in the space i was dealing with. As we had just bought the house, i really didn't feel like ripping it apart for a simple "project" studio.

I could probably dig some of this soundproofing info up again but it may be of less use to you than what you have already found yourself.

If it's sound absorption panels and an effective "how to" you are looking for, then i may be of some assistance...

I am looking for sound isolation. I am lucky that my basement is completely undeveloped so I have clean slate to start from. I have found some decent articles and now its just a matter of finding the time.

Hey herb... I just noticed you're in Saskatoon. I'm down in Regina... We're practically neighbors.

I was just up on the weekend to take in the Junos. It's been a couple of years since I've been up there and boy its booming. I stopped in to Mothers Music too and that is an impressive store. It was kind of a mess the least time I stopped by.

mmmm - Mothers Music
They have received a lot of my income since my return...
They must have been just starting their renovations last time you were there...it WAS a real mess. I ordered a Schecter Stilleto-Elite 5 string from them last summer and when it arrived (10 weeks later), Dave placed it amongst the clutter and phoned me to tell me it was "in". He phoned me back 20 minutes later to say some ******* just ran out the front door with it! I am still convinced they simply lost it in all the mess Laughing
I also just picked up a (6 pce.) set of Sonor 3005's (honey maple) from there - hence my little project to attempt sound isolation Wink
I had no idea how loud maple can be. Perhaps the 2005's (birch) would have been better suited for my needs.

oh well, no complaints Cool

...but i digress... When the time comes to do your framing i would recommend 2'x4'x4"thk 8lb/ft3 sheets of "Roxul" rockwool insulation. If you can't find it elsewhere (i couldn't), Wallace Construction Specialties Inc. up here in Saskatoon carries it and all kinds of other insulating materials you will likely be seeking. I found the prices fairly reasonable as well, although i suppose the term "fairly reasonable" is relative.

Hi, in my previous house I only put up some slight sound absorption... but then again just about everything I did was direct line in.

Anyway, a friend of mine had a fairly propper studio built by a contractor after he researched for many months on his own for sound proofing/isolation. I did all the electrical as I'm an electrical contractor.

From his existing garage, he had the contractor build four double-studded 2X6 walls in new parts within the existing garage walls and the studs were off-set. There is several inches inbetween the new and existing walls... A room with a room. The existing ceiling was more than 10 feet so a new ceiling was built below that on top of the new stud walls. The walls were heavily insulated and he bought special sound-proofing sheet rock.

All electrical boxes for outlets, switches and ceiling light boxes had a special putty that was wrapped around behind and I also layered in inside back of the boxes with this putty before I installed the devices, which was sold to him by the sound proofing company who he bought that multi-layer sound proof sheet rock from. This made all electrical boxes air tight.

Before painting he caulked all joints, corners, etc with a special caulking bought from the same company above. This cost him mind you!

This is as I understand (not being an expert) more or less sound proofing.

The only bad thing in the end that took away from complete sound proofing is that the counter would not allow him to cover up the existing garage window, so the contractor built an opening from his new inner studio walls to the existing window, which is well over one foot deep. He will eventually either install a secondary window, or most likely build a sealed sound deadning cover over this opening. We talked about possibly building a sliding type cover that can be latched and sealed tight to the wall when in place.
Another bad thing was his studio door entrance is just an ordinary solid wood prehung door which leads to the remaining 5 feet of space on the side of the existing garage making basically a hallway leading into the house from the previous existing garage. We talked about him placing sound absorption materials on the studio inside of the door and/or the possibility of installing a second door in front of that door for a double-door. However he did seal the door so it's air tight. The only thing is, I believe air inbetween any layers of anything is important for maximum isolation.

All in all we can play a Marshall Stack on 10 and beat the acoustic drums like a red-headed step child and it's very minimal sound coming inside the house Laughing
Oh and above the old garage/new studio is a spare bedroom (two-story home) that his wife uses as a sewing/TV hang out room for her very own space... Any sound that seeps in from his studio below is also minimal.

This is his just personal home studio and he works mostly alone. He has a day job and this is only his passionate hobby Cool It only get's loud if he's playing his drums for fun or record as well as his electric guitar.... or if he has a jam session.

PS, he had a nnew garage built in front of his existing garage.

Oh, and here's a link to his web site if you're interested in checking out his studio-build details. It's very nice! Smile
