ok, i've gave up on multitrack studio. REAPER is the sequencer I will be using from now on. Yea, you probably dont care, but anyway, um....
somehow, without using audioM8, jamstix is in fact jamming with me, but, not in real time. it plays along with my recorded wav file. heres whats happening, I open jamstix, set it to freejam, and start recording....i can barely hear some cymbals and kick drum,......i record my bit, jamstix hasnt made more than a peep drumwise. and then, I play back my recording, and jamstix then starts jamming with that wav file. i hear snare, cymbals, everything at a high volume, and it sounds great. velocity slider is going up and down and totally responding to what and how i was playing.
my question is, how do i get jamstix to jam with me in real time, as i'm laying down my track? please explain why and elaborate in detail as much as you can, every word you say helps me more in this whole process.....THANKS!! |

In REAPER you need to click the little speaker icon on the track to cycle the input monitoring mode for live feed into Jamstix. You may need to expand the track downward to see the icon. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

You also need to click on the track VU meter to set what the track with jamsix in it is monitoring. If you don't want it to record the jamming, you can set it to monitor the audio without recording.

Thanks for the replies. I've gotten jamstix to jam with me in real time......but during playback it the timing is way off. WHen I'm jamming, its fine, but when I play it back, my guitar is way ahead of the beat, and the timing just doesnt sound the same as when i recorded it. I think this has to do with latency or something? I have no idea really. Can you tell me what this is and how to fix it?
and Stringer, what is the VU meter? |

The level meters that appear when you arm the track for recording by clicking on the little off/on icon under the track number.
As far as the latency goes, are you using the ASIO driver and what is your latency setting?
I just did a search on "latency compensation" in the Reaper docs but got no hits. Maybe somebody more knowledgable will come along.

| I know that I downloaded the ASIO4ALL driver, its on my desktop. But how do I check to see if I'm using it with Reaper? |

There must be some basic configuration options in Reaper, where you can slelect soundcard and driver. An ASIO driver is always recommended for lower latency and better general performance. |

Thanks Doc, I figured out how to select the ASIO driver......but i'm still having a problem with playback on my tracks....
The guitar sounds offbeat when I play the track back. I assume that there is still a bit of latency since i'm plugging the guitar directly into my computer....is that why? When I record, it sounds ok, but when I play it back, its offbeat, is it because the signal from my guitar is taking a few milliseconds to get to the computer? How do I fix that? |

What gear do you use to get your guitar signal into the computer then? Maybe this has some direct monitoring capabilities (like Line 6 Gearbox/PodXT family devices) but still introduces latency to the signal which needs compensation?
Further information would be useful.
EDIT: After reading your post more carefully I understand that you plug your guitar directly to your computer, is that right?
In this case try to lower the latency in the ASIO4all driver menu first. |

Thats true, I am plugging directly into my laptop. I tried lowering the latency, but I didnt see a 'latency' slider, just the ASIO Buffer rate slider. I was set at 480, and I brought it down to about 320 and tried that. While recording, there was crackling and dropouts, very ugly sounding....I dont think it worked.
Any other suggestions? |

Is that 480 samples or 480 milliseconds?
As you are using the inbuilt soundcard on your laptop I assume you are recording at 16/44.
At 480 samples this will be about 11ms latency which is a bit high, but shouldn't be way out of sync.
480ms is way too high obviously as that will be half a second difference.
Jamstix and REAPER work fine sync wise for me with and 11ms latency.
I arrange the drums in Jamstix and then record my guitar to the Jamstix arrangement and the guitars and drums are in sync.
REAPER seems to compensate for everything OK.

Thank you for your response!
Its 480 samples. and your right, its not that much out of sync, but its noticeable, and unsatifying. I'll experiment more with the sample rate....
I would try arranging a drum track like you do, but I dont think I would be able to do that, it seems hard. I wouldnt know the first step. |
