|

having been 'downsized' from my job recently, I've found the time to do some serious fiddling with jamstix and have the following questions :
These are all using JS 1.7 and Cubase LE with a looped wave file :
1. The only configuration I could find that allows me to record the JS out to a midi file is to have the JS track set to -- input: JamStix output JamStix -- although this works, it just doesn't seem correct ... plus I get the 'Midi Loop' warning -- which does't appear to be a problem (can't hear any thing different, but obviously can't be a good thing)
2. After loading 2 or 3 Keyword rhythms, i notice that the arranger shows multiple rhythms (i'm assumming each keyword comes with more than 1 rhythm ??) -- anywho, how can i get JS to use more of the rhythms showing in the arranger?? --- it seems to want to stay on the one in the first row --
3. this just came up now as i was testing to make sure I worded these q's correctly --- I've been looping the same bass line (bars 0-23 of a 55 bar loop) for all my tests. I just turned off the loop and :
3a. Jamstix stops output -- keeps changing bars, etc. in arranger but no sounds.
3b. The arrangement was physically altered
If i turn the loop back on, Jamstix is OK and the arrangment jumps back to what it was before turning off the loop
Also, JS plays nothing past the end of the loop (although the wave file is not finished at that point)
4. What associations are there (if any) between the different modes - ie. If I setup a Keyword Jam, and then switch to Manual or Free, what can I generally expect to happen ( or any combination of those modes). In other words, what impact does switching from one mode to another have on any settings made to the initial mode.
5. Same arrangement -- 'use arrangement is not checked', mode is FreeJam. Arranger shows msg ''... arrangement now controlled by Jamstix, please switch to manual to edit' -- yet it allows me to move the rhythms around ?? is that normal ??
6. as per 5, but mode is Keyword, same situation where I'm able to move the rhythms, but now JS puts some of them back where they were and leaves some where I put them ??
7. (last for now -- sorry for so many but ...)
same as 5 and 6 -- but when moving parts in the arranger, there are times when the arranger will show 2 rhythms for the same bar -- I'm pretty sure that can't be good - here's a screen shot showing this in case you can't believe it ...
None of the above are complaints -- love the program -- just trying to resolve what appear to be discrepancies in how i 'think' it's supposed to work.
I'm thinking that JamStix is actually one of the first apps in a loooonnng while, that has actually done something new and useful instead of just variations on stuff that's already out there. Pretty close to the 'Killer App'
thanks in advance

Instead of setting the JS MIDI track to input=JS, which causes a MIDI feedback loop, leave the JS track alone and add a 2nd MIDI track and set its input=Jamstix to record the MIDI data.

In audio keyword jam mode, JS will use the first bar 50% and intersperse the other rhythms as it goes along. Clear the arrangement and then let JS play for 20 bars or so and you will see the pattern. This is different from MIDI jam where JS can recognize chord structures and assign patterns to chords.

The audio signal volume drives the velocity of JS so as you stop the loop the velocity drops. Watch the velocity slider in JS as you stop the loop to see this happen. You can use the 'Min Velocity' slider in the jam tab to set a floor value that JS won't drop below so you won't have silence even if the audio signal stops.

Isn't all that what you would expect?

Free or KWJ -> Manual : Arrangement stays as is so you can fine-tune manually
All other variants: the new mode takes over the arrangement which changes resulting based on its settings.

5. Same arrangement -- 'use arrangement is not checked', mode is FreeJam. Arranger shows msg ''... arrangement now controlled by Jamstix, please switch to manual to edit' -- yet it allows me to move the rhythms around ?? is that normal ??

Yes, it just isnt' guaranteed that your manual changes will stay in that mode.

6. as per 5, but mode is Keyword, same situation where I'm able to move the rhythms, but now JS puts some of them back where they were and leaves some where I put them ??

Yep, normal. The 'brain' will change some of your changes or leave them alone. It all depends on many variables. That's why it is best to make manual changes in 'Manual Jam' only.

We've seen that before but very rarely and switching away and back to the arranger solves it (for us) making it appear to be a graphical issue rather than an engine issue. So far we have not seen any adverse effects from it so it is a low-priority bug to fix (especially with the JS2 GUI being very different) _________________ Ralph Zeuner

thanks a bunch Ralph ... super response time ....
1. Perfect ...
2. Good info
3. a -- nope -- I meant that I turn off looping - still playing and JS is seeing audio - but not outputting anything
3.b -- actually no -- but that's why I asked -- my expectations don't normally line up with a products reality
4. Excellent -- i'll re-read the manual as well
5 & 6 - Good info again
7. I'm sure you're right -- just thought I'd pass it along |

If you get a chance, could you take a screenshot of that situation with the Cubase transport bar visible and the Jamstix rhythm tab and send it to support[at]rayzoon.com? _________________ Ralph Zeuner
